Visiting A Beautiful Lighthouse: Peggy’s Cove and the “Ghost Lady in Blue”

I visited one of the famous sightseeing spots called “Peggy’s Cove,” which has an old but still-used lighthouse. I've never visited here before, even though I've known about this place for a long time. I was so busy working that I've never had a chance to explore sightseeing places. This place often appears on postcards, in artists' artwork, or in photo books.

It's a bit difficult to find the exit sign for the highway because the sign shows up suddenly and disappears quickly.

Finally, I can see the lighthouse over there on the edge of the cove. The ocean is so beautiful, but the waves are so wild here. I'll show you more about the waves later.

I love seeing these kinds of views in a fishing town. It's one of the most beautiful scenes. Of course, I love the mountains and nature, but I can't forget about the ocean side of nature. Look at the pretty colours of the ships and houses on the blue ocean and under the blue sky.

Yes! These kinds of shabby-chic-looking buildings are so pretty near the ocean. The colourful Muskoka chairs are a perfect fit with these kinds of buildings.

This is one of my favourite photos. The lobster traps are so cool under these colourful houses on the hill. I like the older-style wooden lobster traps, which are becoming antique objects for many people. I think these modern ones are also cool.

The yellow boat, with cool carved wooden artwork, looks good in front of the old but cool workshop building under the blue sky on the deck.

These old, rusted anchors are also very cool near the harbour. The rusting colours tell us the history of hard work.

This is a different angle of the anchors and lobster traps. The yellow goldenrod looks so pretty in this scene.

This photo is also one of my favourite ones! The old boat is also one of the important objects in this photo.

There are a lot of tiny, pretty gift shops. The colourful ocean artwork looks so good in the windows.

Finally, I'm reaching the lighthouse. People enjoy sitting on the rocks.

Look at these beautiful white-looking rocks. How many waves have reached these rocks over the years? The waves have shaved the rocks year by year like this. The natural carving is such an amazing thing.

Okay, here is the warning sign about the waves. I think this is such an important warning sign here because there is no fence along the edge of the cove. Actually, this sign has become the design for stickers at the gift shops. It's a good idea!

This reminded me of Niagara Falls. There was a similar warning sign there.

Peggy’s Cove: Ghost Lady in Blue

According to a local legend, the Lady in Blue was a woman named Margaret, or Peggy, who lost her husband in a tragic accident on the rocky shore. Some say that she left her children in her home country or something like that.

Overcome with grief, she disappeared into the sea. Today, some people say they have seen the ghost of a woman in a blue dress walking among the rocks near Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse, still searching for her loved ones.

There are quite a few versions of this story, but people are scared of the Ghost Lady in Blue. Guess what! I coincidentally wore a blue summer dress on this day without thinking much about the story!

I looked up at the lighthouse and took this photo. This lighthouse is not as big as I thought. It actually gave me a similar impression to when I saw the Merlion in Singapore. Our imagination is way bigger than the actual size, I think.

There are interesting-looking rituals when people visit here. Some people leave keys, signatures, ribbons, or something like that, but people also leave stickers here.

This is the ocean side. Yes, it's pretty old and very rusted. I like the small windows. I imagined how many fishermen have looked at the lights from this lighthouse since it was built here.

The black part is the actual dangerous rocks. There was a guardian who stood on the white rock to watch out for people. I thought it was a tough job, standing there all day long. However, nobody was near the black rocks. The black rocks looked so slippery and dangerous.

I think the colours are so pretty: red and white against the blue. I wish there were no modern-looking buildings in this view. Some professional photographers would erase the buildings digitally, I guess.

I bought a card that described this type of view by a local artist. There are colourful houses and hanging laundry blowing in the ocean wind on the card.

Coming back from the cove to the town side, I had a wonderful-tasting ice cream called Maple Me Crazy at a store called “Hunky Dory.” I couldn't take a photo of the ice cream because I was so busy eating it before it melted.

I can show you the menu description. The shop assistant was very helpful and kind.

Yes, it's a bit pricey, but after getting tired from the ocean wind, you need some sweets and energy. It disappeared very quickly.

The alley names on the street signs are so pretty. I like LOBSTER LN the best.

It was a very busy and fun visit. My dog was so quiet because he saw so many people there. After being in the car on the way home, we stopped at an elementary school grounds in a small town. He was running freely there and showed us his best smile of the day. For him, it doesn't matter whether it's a famous place or not... He is just so simply happy running free in a big field.

This is a cool stone carving by the artist next to the art gallery. It's such hard work to carve hard stone like this! Peggy's Cove is such a pretty place and town to visit and experience the ocean lifestyle. I didn't see any signs of sky pollution in this area. The building restrictions seem pretty well organized, I guess. I like this kind of beautiful place that is well protected by the local people and the government as a heritage site.

美しい灯台：ペギーズコーブと青いドレスを着た女の幽霊を訪ねて

ペギーズ・コーブという有名な観光スポットのひとつに行ってきました。古いけれど今でも使われている灯台があります。ずっと前からこの場所のことは知っていたのですが、実際に訪れるのは初めてでした。仕事がとても忙しく、これまで観光地を訪れる余裕がなかなかありませんでした。この場所は、よく絵はがきになったり、アーティストの作品になったり、写真集に登場するような場所です。

高速道路の出口の案内標識を見つけるのは、ちょっと難しいです。標識が突然現れて、すぐに消えてしまうからです。

ついに、入り江の端にある灯台が見えてきました。海はとても美しいのですが、ここは波がとても荒いです。波については、あとでもっとお見せします。

こういう漁師町の風景を見るのが大好きです。とても美しい光景のひとつだと思います。もちろん、山や自然の風景も大好きですが、海側の自然のことも欠かせません。青い海と青い空を背景に、船や家々のきれいな色が見えます。

そうそう！こういうちょっとシャビーシックな雰囲気の建物は、海の近くにあると本当に素敵です。カラフルなマスコカチェアが、こういう建物にぴったり合っています。

これは私のお気に入りの写真のひとつです。丘の上にあるカラフルな家々の下に置かれたロブスタートラップが、とてもかっこいいです。昔ながらの木製のロブスタートラップもいい味を出していて、アンティークとして飾る人が多いです。この現代バージョンのものも、かっこいいと思います。

黄色いボート、かっこいい木彫り、青い空の下、デッキの上にある古いけれどかっこいい作業場の建物の前にあって、とてもよく映えています。

この古くて錆びた碇も、港の近くにあってとてもかっこいいです。錆びた色が、そこで積み重ねられてきた人々の厳しい仕事の歴史を物語っているようです。

これは碇とロブスタートラップを別の角度から撮ったものです。黄色いセイタカアワダチソウが、この風景の中でとてもきれいです。

この写真もお気に入りのひとつです！古びたボロボロのボートも、この写真の大切な存在のひとつです。

小さくてかわいいお土産屋さんがたくさんあります。窓に飾られたカラフルな海のアート作品が、とてもよく似合っています。

ついに灯台に近づいてきました。人々は岩の上に座って楽しんでいます。

この美しい白い岩を見てください。いったい何回の波が、何年もの間、この岩に打ち寄せてきたのでしょうか。波が何年も何年もかけて、こんなふうに岩を削ってきたのですね。自然が作り出した彫刻って、本当にすごいです。

さて、ここに波についての警告サインがあります。入り江の端にはフェンスがないので、これは本当に大事な注意書きだと思います。

実は、この標識のデザインが、お土産屋さんのステッカーにもなっています。いいアイデアですよね！

これを見て、ナイアガラの滝を思い出しました。そこにも似たような警告サインがありました。

「青いドレスを着た女の幽霊」については、下に書きます。

地元の伝説によると、「青いドレスの女性」はマーガレット、またはペギーという名前の女性だったそうです。彼女は岩だらけの海岸で、悲劇的な事故によって夫を亡くしました。故郷の国に子どもたちを残してきた、という話もあるようです。

深い悲しみに打ちひしがれた彼女は、海の中へ消えていきました。現在でも、ペギーズ・コーブ灯台の近くの岩場で、青いドレスを着た女性の幽霊を見たという人がいるそうです。彼女は今も、大切な人たちを探し続けているのだとか。

この話にはいくつかのバージョンがありますが、人々は「青いドレスを着た女の幽霊」を怖がっているようです。

そして、なんと！　あまり意識していなかったのですが、この日の私はは偶然、青い夏のワンピースを着ていたんです！

灯台を見上げて、この写真を撮りました。この灯台は、私が思っていたほど大きくありませんでした。実際、シンガポールでマーライオンを見たときと似たような印象でした。私たちの想像の中では、実物よりずっと大きくなってしまうものなんですね。

ここを訪れた人たちには、ちょっと面白い習慣があるようです。よく観光スポットに鍵やサイン、リボンなど、いろいろなものを残していく人がいますよね。ここではステッカーを残していく人がいるようです。

こちらは海側です。とても古くて、かなり錆びていますよね。この小さな窓の感じが好きです。この灯台がここに建てられて以来、いったい何人の漁師たちが、この灯台の明かりを見つめてきたのだろうと想像しました。

この黒い部分の岩が、実際に危険な岩場だそうです。白い岩の上には、人々を見守るための監視役の人が立っていました。１日中そこに立っているなんて、大変な仕事だなあと思いました。

黒い岩の近くには誰もいませんでした。黒い岩は、とても滑りやすくて危険そうです。

赤と白が青の中にある、この色合いがとてもきれいだと思います。この景色の中に、後の現代的な建物がなかったらもっといいのになあと思います。プロの写真家なら、きっとデジタルで建物を消してしまうんでしょうね。

この風景を描いた、地元のアーティストのカードを買いました。カードには、カラフルな家々と、海風に揺れる洗濯物が描かれていました。

入り江から町のほうへ戻ってきました。そこで「Hunky Dory」というお店で、メープル・ミー・クレージーという、とてもおいしいアイスクリームを食べました。溶ける前に急いで食べるのに夢中だったので、アイスクリームの写真は撮れませんでした。

メニューの説明ならお見せできます。お店のスタッフは、とても親切で感じのいい人でした。

バニラソフトクリーム、メープルバター、プレッツェル、ライスクリスピー、シーソルト｜１０ドル

ちょっと高いですよね。でも、海風に吹かれて疲れたあとは、甘いものとエネルギーが必要です。あっという間になくなりました。

通りの標識に書かれている路地の名前が、とてもかわいいです。中でも LOBSTER LN がいちばん好きでした。

たくさんの人で賑わっていて、楽しい訪問でした。多くの人を見た私の犬は、とても静かにしていました。

帰り道に車に乗ったあと、小さな町の小学校の敷地に立ち寄りました。そこで愛犬は自由に走り回って、その日の最高の笑顔を見せてくれました。

彼にとっては、有名な場所かどうかなんて関係ないんですよね。ただ大きな野原を自由に走り回ることが、何よりもシンプルにうれしいのだろうと思います。

これは、アートギャラリーの隣にあるアーティストによるかっこいい石の彫刻です。こんなに硬い石を彫るなんて、本当に大変な作業ですね。

ペギーズ・コーブは、海の暮らしを感じながら訪れることのできる、とても美しくて素敵な場所と町です。この地域では、空を汚すような目にうるさい看板などは全く見かけませんでした。建物に関する規制も、かなりきちんと整えられているのだと思います。こういう、美しい場所を地元の人々と政府が協力して、遺産として大切に守っている場所が好きです。
