Things I’ve Seen Recently

I enjoy watching the small pieces of nature surrounding my place through the green binoculars. I think I really like spending time observing nature on my property. All seasons have beautiful moments, but especially spring and early summer are precious. Spring starts quite slowly, so June is a very beautiful season in this mountain.

The farmers are telling us that we should wait to sow seeds just a little bit longer, after the frost has completely ended. Their knowledge is very sharp and intelligent, so they often share accurate information about farming and the weather. As they said, morning and nighttime temperatures are getting milder these days.

Back to the binocular story, I see some birds and squirrels these days. They probably noticed that I was watching them, because my dog also barks when I look outside. The squirrel, whom I call Squirrel-kun, froze for a while until he felt safe.

Through the lenses of my binoculars, Squirrel-kun was eating something he had in his mouth. He used his little hands to hold nuts and other things and ate them very neatly. I was so happy watching him that I lost track of time for a while. After Squirrel-kun went back to his tree, I looked for other things to observe, but it was too dark to find any birds that day.

This wooden apple looks so pretty at the farmers’ market. I don’t visit this farmers’ market very often, but this apple often appears near the main road. I wonder who made it, but the shape and colour of the apple look so cute. Inside the farmers’ market, there are many organic products on the shelves. The prices are not very reasonable because they need to take good care of everything. There are pretty art crafts that are connected to the community and nature.

The staff, who are probably around 12–14 years old, are working so hard for their families at the store. I am amazed that teens’ summer jobs are often at farmers’ markets or farm stands. I bumped into some of my old students who worked at the elementary school a few years ago. They looked proud, working hard at the farmers’ market.

The farmers look so busy in the field. The soil looks so healthy and rich. I wish I could have soil like that for my garden as well. I wonder how many years they spent making such beautiful soil on their farm.

I don’t drink anymore, but I saw some nice-looking non-alcoholic beer, wine, and other drinks at the store. My husband was interested in non-alcoholic craft beer. I remember that I tasted the regular beer version many years ago. Since I stopped drinking, I don’t feel like drinking at all, but I like the smell of beer because its earthy scent is very pleasant. My husband brought some non-alcoholic beer and enjoyed it with Mexican enchiladas. He looked very happy with the small treats.

Lastly, here is my dog watching Squirrel-kun in our garden. He really likes it and finds it interesting. He wants to play with Squirrel-kun so much, but it hides when he jumps out of the house. I wish he could reach it someday soon. He patiently looks out the window every day like this.

最近見たもの

この緑色の双眼鏡を通して、自分の家のまわりにある小さな自然を眺めるのが楽しいです。自分の敷地の中で自然を見ながら時間を過ごすことがとても心地よく感じます。どの季節にも美しい瞬間がありますが、とくに春から初夏にかけては特別な時期だと思います。春はゆっくりと始まるので、私が住む山では６月がとても美しい季節になります。

農家の人たちは、霜が完全になくなってからもう少しだけ種まきを待つべきだと忠告していました。彼らの知識はとても的確で賢く、農業や天候について正しい情報をよく教えてくれます。その言葉の通り、最近は朝と夜の気温も少しずつ穏やかになってきました。

双眼鏡の話に戻ると、最近は家の庭で鳥やリスを見かけます。リスは私が見ていることに気づいているのかもしれません。というのも、私の犬は私が外を見ると吠えるからです。リスくんと名付けたリスは、しばらくの間、危険を感じたのか固まっていました。

双眼鏡越しに見ると、リスくんは口に何かをくわえて食べていました。小さな手でナッツなどをしっかり持ち、とても器用にきれいに食べていました。私はその様子がとても嬉しくて、しばらく時間を忘れて見入ってしまいました。リスくんが木の家に戻ったあと、他のものも探しましたが、その日は暗くなってしまい鳥は見つけられませんでした。

この木でできたリンゴはファーマーズマーケットで見かけて、とてもかわいらしいと思います。私はあまりこの市場には行きませんが、このリンゴはよく道路沿いに出ているので印象的です。どなたが作ったのかは分かりませんが、形も色もとても可愛らしいです。そのファーマーズマーケットの中には、オーガニック商品がたくさん棚に並んでいます。手入れに手間がかかるため、値段はあまり安くはありません。地域や自然とつながった素敵なアート作品も置かれています。

おそらく１２〜１４歳くらいのスタッフたちが、お店で家族のために一生懸命働いていました。１０代の夏のアルバイトがファーマーズマーケットや農場の直売店であることが多いのは、とてもすごいことだと思います。数年前に小学校で仕事をしていた頃の元生徒さんたちにも偶然会いました。彼らは誇らしそうに、ファーマーズマーケットで働いていました。

農家の人たちは畑でとても忙しそうにしています。土はとても健康で豊かに見えます。私もあのような土を自分の庭に使えたらいいのにと思います。あんなに良い土を作るのに、どれくらいの年月がかかるのだろうと考えてしまいます。

私はもうお酒は飲みませんが、店でノンアルコールのビールやワインなどを見かけました。主人はノンアルコールのクラフトビールに興味を持っていました。私は昔飲んだビールのことを思い出しました。お酒をやめてからはまったく飲みたい気持ちはありませんが、ビールの香りはいまだに好きです。自然の香ばしい香りがとても心地よいと感じます。夫はノンアルコールビールを買って、メキシカンのエンチラーダと一緒に楽しんでいました。小さなご褒美を嬉しそうに味わっていました。

最後に、庭でリスくんを見つめている私の犬の写真です。とても興味津々で楽しんでいます。リスくんと遊びたくて仕方がないようですが、犬が飛び出すとリスは隠れてしまいます。いつかうまく近づける日が来るといいなと思います。毎日、こんなふうに窓の外をじっと見ています。
