The Bear Moon Whispered 'Hi'
February's full moon is called Mkwa Giizis (Bear Moon). Hmm… why do Indigenous people call it the Bear Moon? The Bear Moon reflects the time when bears give birth to their cubs.
I see. That’s why the Indigenous people of my hometown, the Ainu, used to find baby bears in caves during the cold winter. I remember seeing scenes of this in old paintings at the historical museum. When they took the cubs from the cave, the mother bears were supposed to be sleeping. Brown bears, called Higuma, give birth in January or February.
The full moon always gives me a super refreshing feeling, even though my body is affected by its energy. It sometimes feels so tough and heavy. A few days before the full moon, I usually feel like my body is weighed down, as if something is pulling me down.
After struggling with that feeling for a few days, I finally saw the beautiful full moon in the sky. I love looking at it anytime, but the winter full moon amazes me the most. When the weather is dry and freezing, I go outside and gaze up at the sky for a while.
The air is incredibly fresh, and the atmosphere is silent. Once, when I tried to take a photo of the full moon, the image accidentally came out looking like lightning. I liked it! It felt as if the Bear Moon was speaking to me, saying, "Hi!" I often greet it with, "Long time no see."
I always stop myself from howling at the moon. I don’t know why, but I feel an urge to do it.
We used to have a Siberian Husky at my mother’s house. She lived until she was 15. She did very well. I loved her so much. She often howled at the moon like a wolf, and her voice was beautiful. Whenever she started howling, I would go near her and listen until she stopped. I really miss her howling.

ベアームーンのあいさつ
2月の満月のことを、先住民の方たちはMkwa Giizis （ベアームーン）と呼ぶらしいです。なぜベアームーンなのでしょう。ベアームーンの時期は、熊が赤ちゃんを出産する時期を反映しているのだそうです。
なるほど。だから北海道のアイヌの人たちは寒い冬に熊の洞穴から赤ちゃん熊を連れ帰る時期なのですね。歴史の博物館で見た展示物には、寒い冬の絵が描かれていたのを覚えています。赤ちゃん熊を連れ出す時、母親はおそらくまだ冬眠中で寝ているのでしょうか。北海道のヒグマの出産時期も1月、2月だそうです。
満月はいつも新鮮な気持ちにしてくれますが、私にとっては体調がすぐれず難しい時期でもあります。かなりしんどくて、体が鉛のように重たくなります。満月の数日前は、たいてい体が下から引っ張られているような感覚に陥ります。
数日間、体調の悪い時期が続いた後、美しい満月が空に浮かんでいるのを目にします。どの季節の満月も素敵ですが、冬の満月は格別です。空気が乾燥して、凍てつく寒さの冬の満月を眺めるために外に出ます。
空気はとんでもなく澄んでいて、辺りはシーンとしています。満月の写真を撮ろうとしたら、カメラの誤作動で雷のような写真が撮れてしまいました。いい感じです！ベアームーンが「やあ！」と、話しかけてきたような気がします。わたしはいつも満月に「おひさしぶりです」と声をかけます。
満月に向かって吠えてしまいそうな衝動をいつも抑えています。なぜかはわからないのですが、そんな気持ちになるのです。
昔、実家でシベリアンハスキーを飼っていました。彼女は１５歳まで頑張って生きてくれました。大往生です。わたしは彼女のことが大好きでした。よく、満月に向かってとてもきれいな声で遠吠えしていました。彼女が遠吠えを始めると、彼女のそばに駆けつけ、遠吠えが終わるまでそばにいました。今でも彼女の遠吠えする声が耳に焼きついています。
