Straw Bale Photography

I shared photos of hay rolls before. This time, I took photos of straw bales. I love taking photos of the countryside like this. I enjoy seeing hay rolls in the field, and I love capturing these kinds of moments, which are all about delivering reliable things.

When I went to check my mail at the community spot near my house, I saw a huge truck loaded with straw bales. There are quite a few farms around here, so this is a fairly common scene. However, when I happen to witness moments like deliveries, cows being moved, and other farm work, I get excited. It feels special.

I was wondering why I feel so excited witnessing these scenes. Maybe it’s because they connect me to nature, show clear progress, follow a calming rhythm, spark nostalgia, delight the senses, and inspire admiration for honest, skilled effort. I know I’m just talking about small, everyday events in the countryside, but to me, they’re meaningful.

I think it’s a small thing, but for me, it leaves a strong impression. That’s probably because I grew up in a suburb where farmlands were everywhere when I was young. My hometown has changed a lot compared to this rural area. I understand that change is inevitable, especially in a large, developed country. Development is necessary, but if we can preserve cultural traditions connected to nature, I think that would be truly valuable.

I love the golden look of straw bales, with white clouds and blue sky above them. The smell of straw was a little earthy and sweet, and the temperature around them was hot and humid. Their energy felt similar to that of animals, warm and alive.

Japanese straw bale houses, known as warazumi or warabeya, have roots in traditional rural architecture. Historically, straw from rice harvesting (wara) was used for insulation, roofing (thatch), and even walls in farming villages. These structures were eco-friendly, breathable, and made from local, renewable materials.

In modern times, Japan has seen a revival of straw bale construction, influenced by Western natural building techniques. This blends traditional materials with sustainable design. Today, straw bale houses represent a return to slow, ecological living rooted in Japan’s farming heritage.

I believe we should share this culture more with the current generation. Straw bale houses are not only ecological and sustainable but also have a cool appearance, especially when mixed with modern Western-style architecture.

ストローベイルの写真

干し草ロールの写真を以前投稿しました。今回は、ストローベイルの写真です。こういった田舎の風景を写真撮影するのが好きです。牧草地に転がっている干し草ロールを眺めるのも好きですし、私たちの暮らしにとって大切なものを配達している瞬間を目撃するのも好きです。

家の近所にあるスポットに郵便物を取りに行った際、ストローベイルを乗せた大きなトラックが停車しているのが目に入りました。この近所には農家があちこちにあるので、よく見かける光景ではあります。しかし、こんな風に配達している真っ最中だったり、牛たちが移動している最中だったりと、農家の仕事を目の当たりにするときは、とても特別に感じます。

なぜ、そのような風景を見ると、こんなにもワクワクするのでしょうか。もしかすると、自然とつながる瞬間や、明確な作業過程を見たり、穏やかなリズムを感じたり、懐かしい雰囲気に包まれたり、感覚を研ぎ澄まされる瞬間や、誠実で熟練した技術を目撃したりすることに対してワクワクを覚えるのではないか…そんな風に思えてきます。田舎の日常生活の中で、よく起こりうる小さな出来事だとわかっているのですが、自分にとってはたいへん意味があることのように感じます。

小さなことであっても、強い印象を与えてくれるものだと思うのです。おそらく、自分が実際に農家のある風景が日常的に生活の一部だった郊外で育ったからかもしれません。しかし、私の生まれ育った故郷は、今住んでいる田舎に比べると、かなり変わってしまいました。もちろん、特に大きな国で頻繁に起こる開発は致し方ないこのなのだと、頭の中では理解しています。開発は必要ですが、自然と結びついた文化的伝統を保存することができれば、それこそ、真の価値を見出せるのではないかと思います。

この黄金色のストローベイルと、その上に見える白い雲と青い空の色合いが好きです。藁の少し土臭い匂い、甘い香りと近づくと蒸し暑い感覚がしてくるのが好きです。この藁が発しているエネルギーは、生きている動物たちの温もりに似ている気がします。

日本の藁でできた家は、藁積み（わらづみ）や藁小屋（わらべや）として知られ、伝統的な農村建築にそのルーツがあるそうです。かつては、稲刈りの後に出る藁が、断熱材や屋根（茅葺き）、さらには壁材としても使われていました。こういった建物は、環境に優しく通気性があり、地元で手に入る再生可能な素材で作られていたのだそう。

現代の日本では、西洋の自然な建築技術の影響を受けて、ストローベイル建築が再び注目されるようになっているとのこと。これは、伝統的な素材と持続可能なデザインを融合させたものであり、現在のストローベイルハウスは、日本の農村文化に根ざした、ゆっくりとしたエコな暮らしへの回帰を象徴しているのだそうです。

ぜひ、昔からある伝統的な家づくりの技術を現代にもっと活用した方がいいと思います。ストローベイルの家はエコでサステイナブルなだけではなく、西洋風建築と日本の古風なデザインが混ざり合う、見た目もかなり素敵な家になるのではないかと思うのです。
