Signs of Spring

It's still chilly, especially in the morning and at night. The morning frost is still here, but the daytime sunshine is getting warmer little by little. After melting the snow, the wind remains chilly and sometimes too cold.

I often search for signs of spring because the winter weather is very tough and long here. Whenever I see a hint of spring, I feel relieved.

The blue sky and the white clouds still look cold above the muddy ocean when the tide is out. The mud, resembling chocolate, still looks somewhat hard in the cold air. This is typical in the middle of winter like the scene below.

These photos were taken just before heavy snowfall in winter. The muddy part was covered by ice, resembling a giant brownie covered with icing.

Back to the spring photo, the ground still looks brown, with fewer green plants on the side of the hiking trail. I presume the winter storm knocked down the birch trees. The ocean breeze remains cold.

I see the yellow flowers called coltsfoot near my house! Yay! I love seeing cheerful yellow flowers. They naturally make me happy. In my hometown, amur adonis, which is called 'fukujusou' in Japanese, signals that spring is here. Fukujusou is also a pretty yellow flower. It's a very resilient spring flower that emerges from under the snow. The coltsfoot flower reminds me of fukujusou.

My chive garden is also recovering from the cold winter. The fresh green stems are growing well this spring, just like last spring. I am happy to see them every spring like this. I imagine their pretty pink flowers will smell lovely in June already. I freeze chives in my freezer every autumn. Soon, the frozen chives in the freezer will be finished.

春の兆し

相変わらず肌寒い日が続いています。特に朝晩は冷えます。まだ朝に霜が下りますが、日中の太陽はだんだんと暖かく降り注ぐようになってきました。雪がとけても風が冷たく、時に寒々としています。

ここでの冬の暮らしは厳しく長いので、私はよく春の兆しを探します。春のヒントを見つけると、心がやすらぎます。

海が引き潮になった時に見える泥の上の青空と白い雲はまだ寒い雰囲気を醸し出しています。チョコレートのように見える泥は、冷たい空気でまだ固そうです。同じ場所で撮った冬真っ盛りの写真は下にあります。

これはドカ雪が降る前の冬になりたての頃に撮った写真です。凍りついた泥の部分はまるでアイシングに覆われた大きなブラウニーのように見えます。

春の話に戻ります。写真の中に写っている地面はまだ茶色でハイキングトレールの横の草はまだ少ししか緑になっていません。この白樺の木は吹雪で倒れたのだと思います。海風が寒いです。

フキタンポポが家の近所に咲いています！やったぁ！私は春の元気そうな黄色い花を見かけると自然に嬉しくなります。私の故郷では、福寿草という同じく黄色い花が春に咲きます。福寿草はとても可愛らしい黄色い花なのにも関わらず、大変力強い花で、雪の下から生えてきます。このフキタンポポは福寿草を思い出させてくれます。

庭のチャイブ畑も無事に越冬してくれました。去年と同じく新しい緑の茎が生えてきています。毎春この光景を目にするのが楽しみです。６月に咲く花と香りを今から思い浮かべています。秋には毎年このチャイブを凍らせておいて冬の間食べます。もうそろそろ冷凍しておいたチャイブも無くなる頃です。
