Shredding My Documents!

Bills, documents, contracts, instructions, photos, letters, certificates, schedules, textbooks, and just plain rubbish... There’s a lot of paper in our house. How often do I need to check it all? Most of the time, most of the paper isn't necessary. If I don't keep it, how much trouble would I really have without it? Probably not much.

So, why do we keep so much paper? Hmm... there are many reasons, I guess. I forget what I have in my files, I forget to throw things away, I keep them "just in case," I fear being without them, I try to ignore their existence, some items are sentimental, and more.

I often check my files to reconsider whether I should keep them or not. This time, I went through some pretty important documents related to immigration. I kept what I needed to, but I realized I didn't need to hold onto every single paper from the immigration process.

I decided to go through those documents this time. They were so thick and heavy. As I was sorting through them, many past feelings surfaced, including nervousness, sadness, self-awareness, both good and bad memories, and different types of emotions attached to those old documents.

I used a shredder for almost all of my old documents in Japan. I still keep the important papers, but whenever I go through them, I feel a bit of heaviness.

Using the shredder is very helpful. Once I put papers into the machine, I can't take them back out. It forces me to commit to getting rid of them forever. After the documents are reduced to thin strips of rubbish, I've never regretted it.

There were four small plastic bags of shredded paper! I needed to wrap them carefully because, last time, when I threw away some shredded paper, either the garbage collectors or raccoons made a hole in the bags, and the paper was scattered all over the road after garbage collection. It wasn't easy to pick up the tiny pieces from the road... This time, I packed everything very carefully! I felt refreshed.

書類をシュレッダーにかける！

請求書、書類、契約書、説明書、写真、手紙、賞状、スケジュール、テキスト、ただの紙屑などなど…家の中にはあらゆる紙があります。どのくらいの頻度で定期チェックをすれば良いのでしょうか。たいてい、よく見るとほとんどの紙は必要な紙ではないです。もし保管しなければ、どれだけたいへんなことが起こるでしょうか？おそらく何の問題もないことがほとんどでしょう。

じゃあ、なぜ人はそんなに紙を溜め込むのでしょうか？うーん…理由はたくさんあると思います。ファイルに何が入っているのかを単に忘れているだけ、捨てるのを忘れているだけ、「念のため」にとっておいただけ、捨てるのが怖い、存在自体を忘れようとしていた、名残惜しくて捨てられなかった…などなど。

ときどき捨てるかとっておくかを吟味するようにしています。今回は、移民局関係の少し重要な部類の書類を見直しました。絶対に必要なものはとってありますが、移民局に申し込むにあたってその時は必要だたけれど、今はもう必要のないものまでとってあることに気がつきました。

今回そういった類の書類を捨てることにしました。とっても分厚くて重たかったです。仕分けしている間、いろんな過去の気持ちが蘇ってきました。悲しみ、気づき、良い悪い両方の思い出、紙にくっついていたさまざまな感情がわいてきました。

日本では必要のないほぼ全部の書類を処分済みです。重要な書類はとってありますが、見直すと重い感情が出てくるものがあります。

ですから粉々にしてくれるシュレッダーを使用するのは助かります。一度機械に紙を入れて仕舞えば取り戻しができません。ですから、もうシュレッダーにかけてしまえばそれで終わり。もともとは書類だった紙が細くて小さなゴミになってしまったあとに、後悔したことはほとんどありません。

買い物用サイズのゴミ袋が４つ分のゴミになりました！前回こうして捨てたときにゴミ処理をしてくれた方かアライグマのどちらかがゴミ袋に穴を開けてしまったらしく、シュレッダーにかけた紙類がそこら中に散らばっていました。道路に落ちたシュレッダーの紙屑を拾うのはとても難しいのです。今回は気をつけてしっかり包んだので何事もなく回収してもらえました！スッキリ！
