Preparing for Winter in Summer
The summer weather is making life very comfortable here. It's not too hot, and we have a very cool breeze in the mornings and evenings. The mosquitoes and deer flies are disappearing little by little. It's a great time to do yard work.
I wanted to start stacking firewood early this summer because we needed to order more than we did last year. Last winter, we were very careful about how much wood we used because we had almost run out of firewood the winter before due to the extremely cold weather. We even had to order extra firewood that season. That's why we were so thrifty last winter. Even so, we used almost all of it. There were only a few pieces left in the woodshed, and it was almost empty.
The squirrels have been using our woodshed, especially during the winter. We don't mind them using it because it's much better than having them move underneath the house. When I was cleaning out the woodshed to make room for this year's firewood, I found seeds and nuts all over the floor. As I was sweeping them up, I heard the squirrels chattering nearby. I told them that I needed to borrow their shed for a while!
Unfortunately, the firewood company we had ordered from for the past two years wasn't able to take our order this year. They told us they were fully booked and couldn't deliver until after autumn. Hmm... that was too risky. We wanted to prepare well before autumn because the wood usually needs time to dry before we use it. It's also much easier on our bodies to do this kind of work during the warm months. Doing heavy yard work in cold weather isn't good for our health.
My husband asked for recommendations on a local community website, hoping to find another firewood company. Surprisingly, several people recommended the very same company we had first ordered from when we moved to this area. We had thought they had moved away and closed their business because they told us they had sold their house at that time. However, they were still in business even after moving away. We always liked them because they were so friendly. When my husband called to place an order, they even remembered us!
They delivered the firewood very quickly, and the quality was excellent. They told us it had already been fully seasoned. We had ordered one cord this year, but they delivered one and a half cords. Well, I don't think we'll need to order any next year! We were so relieved. Preparing for winter during the summer is very important when you live in a cold climate.
I hope I can carry and stack all the firewood before the really hot weather arrives or before September. Today was the perfect day to do it. The weather was sunny, but the cool breeze kept me comfortable the whole time. If it gets too hot, I can't keep my energy up for very long. Even though the weather was nice, I didn't want to overwork myself.
I usually make three or four trips with the wheelbarrow. If I do too much, I become completely exhausted. I carried ten pieces of firewood on each trip, so I carried and stacked forty pieces this morning. Phew... Looking at the huge pile on our driveway, it hardly looked like I had made any progress yet!
After stacking the firewood, I also did some weeding in the garden. Every time I spend time working in my garden or caring for the nature around me, I feel as though it speaks to me. I mean, nature seems to respond when people take good care of it.
A monarch butterfly came back again this year! They are so beautiful and make me happy every summer. I found one resting on a nectar-filled flower.
Hopefully, I can finish all of the yard work before the cold season arrives.

夏に冬の準備
夏らしい気候のおかげで、最近の暮らしはとても快適です。暑すぎることもなく、朝晩にはとても涼しい風が吹いています。蚊やアブも少しずつ少なくなってきました。今は庭仕事をするにはちょうど良い季節です。
今年は、夏の早いうちから薪を積み始めたいと思っていました。去年の夏よりも多くの薪を注文しなければならないからです。昨年の冬は、かなり注意して少しずつ薪を使いました。その前の年の冬は寒さが厳しく、薪が足りなくなってしまい、そのシーズン中に追加で注文しなければならなかったからです。その経験があったので、昨年の冬はとても慎重に薪を使いました。それでも、ほとんどの薪を使い切ってしまいました。薪小屋には数本残っているだけで、ほぼ空っぽになりました。
冬になると、リスたちは私たちの薪小屋を利用しています。使ってもらっても別にいいので、特に気にしていません。それよりも、家の床下に住みつかれる方が困るため、薪小屋を使ってくれるほうがずっといいからです。今年の薪を積むために薪小屋を掃除していると、床にはたくさんの種や木の実が落ちていました。それをほうきで掃いていると、近くからリスたちの鳴き声が聞こえてきました。ちょっとの間だけ、君たちの小屋を借りるねと、リスたちへ話しかけました。
残念ながら、この２年間お願いしていた薪屋さんには今年は注文できませんでした。すでに予約でいっぱいで、配達できるのは秋以降だと言われたのです。うーん…それでは少し心配です。薪は使う前に十分乾燥させる時間も必要ですし、薪を運ぶ作業は暖かいうちに済ませておいたほうが体にも負担が少ないからです。寒くなってから重い庭仕事をするのは健康にもあまり良くありません。
そこで、主人は地域のコミュニティサイトで薪屋さんを紹介してもらうことにしました。すると、何人もの方が同じ会社を勧めてくれました。なんと、その会社は私たちがこの地域へ引っ越してきたときに、一番最初に薪を注文した会社だったのです。当時、その会社は家を売ったと話していたので、引っ越して廃業したものだと思っていました。ところが、地域を離れたあとも営業を続けていたそうです。その会社がとても親切だったので気に入っていました。主人が電話で注文すると、なんと私たちのことを覚えていてくれました！
薪はすぐに届けてくれましたし、品質もとても良かったです。十分に乾燥していますよと、教えてくれました。今年は１コードほど注文したのですが、実際に届いたのは１、５コードでした。これなら、たぶん来年は注文しなくても大丈夫そうです。本当に安心しました。
寒い地域で暮らすには、夏のうちから冬支度をしておくことがとても重要です。本格的な暑さが来る前、あるいは９月までには、全部の薪を運んで積み終えたいと考えています。今日は運ぶ作業にぴったりの日でした。天気は良かったのですが、涼しい風がずっと吹いていて、とても作業しやすかったです。暑すぎる日は、長時間体力が持ちません。天気は良かったものの、無理はしたくありませんでした。
たいてい、１日の作業で手押し車で３〜４回ほど運ぶようにしています。やりすぎると、本当に疲れ切ってしまうからです。今回は一輪車１回につき薪を１０本運びました。つまり、今朝は４０本積んだことになります。ふぅ…。たくさん運んだ気持ちになりましたが、家の前に積まれた大量の薪を見ると、ほとんど減っていないように見えます。
薪を積み終えたあと、庭の草取りもしました。庭や自然の手入れをしていると、いつも自然が話しかけてくれるような気がします。人が大切に手をかけると、自然もちゃんと応えてくれるように感じるという意味です。
今年もオオカバマダラが戻ってきてくれました！毎年このチョウを見ると本当にうれしくなります。蜜がたっぷり入った花にとまっていました。
寒い季節が来る前に、庭仕事をすべて終えられるといいなと思っています。
