Mallard Duck is Here Again!

I went for a walk with my dog by the river near my house the other day and again yesterday. It had been a while since I last visited this river. Last autumn, there were Canada geese and their babies before they flew south.

This time, I never expected to encounter a pair of mallard ducks. They are also a symbol of North America. When I was a child, my father got a souvenir wooden mallard duck craft. It looked so beautiful. I was amazed by the colours of the ducks.

In my hometown, there is also a chance to see them. I like not only the green-headed males but also the brown females. They are both so beautiful. Furthermore, their calls are unique and funny. They sound like they are having a conversation in a group and laughing with each other.

This time, I saw only two mallard ducks, one male and one female. They both looked so happy together. It seemed like they were having a nice conversation, looking at each other just like in the photo.

I often wish I had a super high-quality camera whenever I see birds like this.

I’m also sharing some winter moments through photos. I saw a floating oak leaf. As soon as I tried to take a picture, the leaf sank into the river. I often notice that nature shots last only a moment. However, it came back to the surface. I had another chance to take the photo. It was another lucky moment in nature.

I still have some thick ice and snow in my yard. I took this beautiful photo of the ice a few days ago. Perhaps it fell from the roof. It’s all gone now. I thought I saw some tigers and their family in the photo. Some of the ice looks like tigers, doesn’t it? I love watching ice.

I hope this snow will disappear soon, but there is still thick snow stuck on my property. Somehow, there was less snow near the river. It’s snowing outside again. I sometimes have a small fear that the snow might never disappear in spring. Interestingly, it always melts properly when the weather becomes warm, usually in March or April.

マガモがまたやってきました

先日と昨日、家の近くの川へ犬と散歩に行きました。この川を訪れるのは久しぶりでした。昨年の秋には、南へ渡る前のカナダグース（カナダガン）とそのヒナたちがいました。

今回は、まさかマガモのつがいに出会えるとは思っていませんでした。マガモも北アメリカを象徴する鳥のひとつです。子どもの頃、父がお土産に木製のマガモの置き物を買ってきてくれたことがあります。とてもきれいで、その色の美しさに驚いたのを覚えています。

私の故郷でも、出会えることがあります。緑色の頭をしたオスだけでなく、茶色のメスも大好きです。どちらも本当に美しいです。それに、鳴き声がとても独特で可愛らしいのです。まるでグループでおしゃべりをして、笑い合っているように聞こえます。

今回はオスとメスの2羽だけでした。とても仲が良さそうで、写真のようにお互いを見つめながら楽しそうに会話しているように見えました。

こういう鳥に出会うたびに、もっと高性能なカメラがあったらいいのに、と思います。

冬のひとときも写真に収めました。川に浮かぶ１枚のオークの葉を見つけました。写真を撮ろうとした瞬間、その葉は水の中へ沈んでしまいました。自然の瞬間は本当に一瞬だとよく感じます。でも、しばらくするとまた水面に戻ってきました。もう一度写真を撮るチャンスをもらえたのです。これも自然がくれた、ささやかなラッキーでした。

庭にはまだ分厚い氷と雪が残っています。数日前に、その美しい氷の写真を撮りました。たぶん屋根から落ちてきたものだと思います。今はもうすっかりなくなってしまいました。

その写真の中に、トラの家族が見える気がしました。いくつかの氷はトラのように見えませんか？私は氷を眺めるのが大好きです。

この雪も早く消えてほしいと思っています。でも、敷地内にはまだ分厚い雪が残っています。不思議なことに、川の近くのほうが雪は少なかったです。今もまた外では雪が降っています。

春になっても雪が消えなかったらどうしよう、と時々少し不安になります。でも、暖かくなれば、毎年きちんと溶けていきます。たいていは３月か４月頃には消えていきます。
