I See a Hint of Spring

The sun is shining outside the window. Icicles are melting, and I can hear them falling and sticking to the snow on the ground. I love the sound of melting icicles.

However, the snow stuck on the roof reminds me of my hometown. The roof of my current house is not very steep, so I don’t hear the sound of snow sliding off. In my hometown, around this season, I often hear the loud crash of snow sliding down from the roof. It was a dangerous moment.

In my hometown, neighbours often climbed up onto their roofs to push the thick snow down to the ground. That scene feels very nostalgic now. I don’t often see that kind of scene anymore. Roof styles have changed, and people don’t live in houses with steep triangular roofs as much as before. Modern roofs now have special snow-melting designs. That’s why I no longer see men on rooftops in late winter like I used to.

Nature hikes are also different compared to a month ago. The quality of the snow has changed a lot because of the temperature. Sometimes it’s hard to walk on the half-melted snow. It feels like walking on sherbet or soft sand.

I like seeing our shadows on the trees in the forest when I walk along the higher path next to the lake. At the bottom of the photo, you can see my dog’s legs in the snow. In the picture, my dog looks like a giant monster. I think you can also see his tail on the snow. My shadow is on the tree as well.

I feel that these trees are half awake. I’ve started noticing small buds on their branches. They are waiting for spring, which will come soon.

Groundhog Day has already passed, as well as the Japanese bean-throwing festival called Setsubun. Both events are connected to the coming of spring, which is almost here.

A few years ago, I saw a small groundhog in my yard. He was so pretty and carefree. He didn’t notice that I was watching him. Little by little, he walked toward me. I imagined he was whistling and enjoying the spring weather. I thought he would notice me soon, but he didn’t. I didn’t want to surprise him, so I stayed still. He finally noticed me when he was almost touching my sneakers. He looked completely shocked. Almost all his fur stood up. I felt sorry for him and didn’t make any noise. He immediately ran away from my yard. I couldn’t take a photo because I didn’t have my phone with me. I just watched him run away. He looked so cute, like a cartoon character.

The sunshine is melting the forest little by little, day by day. Oh, by the way, we met an old man at the exit of the forest that day. He said he is 84 years old and was carrying a very cool handmade wooden walking stick that he made himself.

He told us he had spent about four hours in the forest alone that day. He was wearing long boots, but he didn’t look cold at all. He shared stories from his past. Surprisingly, he had been involved in creating this hiking trail many years ago. He helped design the hiking course in this forest. Amazing! I have never met someone who actually created a hiking trail. He looked very proud. I hope he stays healthy for many years to come.

I also wrote a birthday letter to my grandmother. She is very old now, but she has been eating well at her nursing home lately. My mother is so happy to bring her sweets and food because she has started eating properly again. A few years ago, she stopped eating and had to receive IV fluids. We were very worried about her, but she has recovered so much. I hope the spring weather will make everyone’s hearts feel brighter and lighter.

春の兆し

窓の外では太陽が輝いています。つららが溶けて、地面の雪に落ちて突き刺さる音が聞こえます。私は、つららが溶けるあの音が大好きです。

屋根に積もった雪を見ると、ふと故郷を思い出します。今住んでいる家の屋根はあまり角度が急ではないので、雪が滑り落ちる音は聞こえません。けれど故郷では、この季節になると屋根から雪がドサッーと大きな音を立てて落ちるのをよく耳にしました。少し危険な瞬間でもあります。

近所の人たちは屋根に上がって、積もった厚い雪を下に落としていました。あの屋根の雪おろしの光景はいま思うととても懐かしいです。最近はあまり見かけなくなりました。屋根の形も変わり、三角屋根のような家は少なくなり、今は雪を溶かす仕組みがある屋根も増えました。だから、冬の終わりに屋根に上る人の姿をすっかり見なくなりました。

ハイキングコースの様子も、１ヶ月前とはずいぶん違います。気温の影響で雪の質が変わりました。半分溶けた雪の上を歩くのは少し大変です。シャーベットや、やわらかい砂の上を歩いているような感覚です。

湖のそばの少し高いところにある道を歩きながら、木々に映る自分たちの影を見るのが好きです。写真の下には、雪の中の犬の足が写っています。まるで巨大なモンスター犬のように見えます。雪の上には犬のしっぽも見え、木には私の影も映っています。

森の雪の上には、私と夫の影も写っています。木たちはもう半分目を覚ましているように感じます。枝には小さな芽がふくらみ始めていました。春がもうすぐそこまできているようです。

グラウンドホッグ・デーも、日本の節分も、もう過ぎました。どちらも春の訪れに関わる行事です。

数年前、庭で小さなグラウンドホッグを見かけました。とてもかわいらしくて、呑気そうにしていました。彼は私に気づかず、こちらに向かって少しずつ近づいてきました。まるで春の空気を楽しみながら口笛でも吹いているように見えました。驚かせたくなくて、私はじっとしていました。スニーカーに触れそうなほど近づいたとき、ようやく私に気づきました。その瞬間、全身の毛が逆立つほど驚いた様子でした。かわいそうになり、声をあげないようにしました。すると、彼はすぐに走り去っていきました。そのときはスマホを持っていなかったので、写真は撮れませんでした。ただ走り去る後ろ姿を見送るだけでした。まるでアニメのキャラクターのように愛らしかったです。

太陽の光が、森を少しずつ溶かしています。そうです、その日、森の出口で８４歳の男性に出会いました。自分で作った素敵な木の杖を持っていました。その日は一人で４時間も森を歩いていたそうです。長靴を履いていていましたが、寒そうには見えませんでした。昔、このハイキングコースを作るプロジェクトに関わったそうです。この森の道をつくった一人なのです。そんな人に出会ったのは初めてでした。おじいさんはとても誇らしげでした。これからも元気でいてほしいと思いました。

祖母に誕生日の手紙を書きました。今は施設にいますが、最近はよく食べているそうで、母は、お菓子や食べ物を持って行くのが嬉しいようです。数年前は食事をとれず、点滴を受けていた時期もありました。とても心配しましたが、今はずいぶん回復しました。春の光が、みんなの心も明るくしてくれますように。
