Golden Hay Rolls of Summer

My favourite season and scene is near my house on a hot summer day. The breeze from the ocean mixes with the mountain air in my neighbourhood. I often notice a beautiful golden hay field that has been carefully prepared by the farmers. When I see the hay rolls, a farmer’s truck, and smell the air filled with hay and the scent of the farm, it makes me feel something very special and precious.

There are hemlock flowers and Queen Anne’s lace blooming everywhere during this season. You can see the hay rolls scattered across the big, quiet field. Beyond the pine trees, the ocean appears in the distance. That’s why the ocean breeze comes through the trees toward you.

The hay rolls look so toasted, almost as if they’re ready to eat. The sweet scent of hay and grass is one of my favourite smells of summer.

Actually, I wanted to take photos of the freshly cut hay and capture the drying process before they were rolled the other day. They looked like golden waves drying in the big field. However, I forgot to bring my phone with me, so I couldn’t take any photos. When I returned to the field, everything had already been rolled up. Farmers are such hard workers, aren’t they?

My husband told me a famous expression. “Make hay while the sun shines.” It means to take advantage of a good situation or opportunity while it lasts, to act quickly when conditions are favourable to achieve the best outcome. Apparently, I had a reason to miss the chance to take those photos, according to that expression. Unfortunately, I couldn’t capture them, but I still had an exciting moment after visiting the field.

It was very hot, quiet, and peaceful.

Then, suddenly, I heard the sound of a truck, it seemed to move so slowly. Yes, the farm truck was carrying hay rolls. It came up the road little by little. The car behind it was trying to be patient.

We paused our walk for a while because my dog was so happy to hear the sound of the engine. I don’t know why, but he likes that particular kind of engine sound. The driver waved to us, and we waved back to him.

I took these special photos of the hay rolls. They look fresh, reliable, delicious, and important. I respect the farmers’ summer preparations for their farms and their animals. I love how the shadows of the trees fall on the hay rolls. You can feel the summer air, hear the engine of the slow truck, and imagine the animals who will enjoy eating the hay.

夏の黄金の干し草ロール

暑い夏の日、近所で見かける大好きなシーンです。家を出ると、あたり一体、海から吹いてくる風と山の空気が混ざり合っているのを感じます。農家の人たちが労力をかけて丸くまとめた干し草ロールが近所の牧草地に並びます。干し草ロールや農場のトラックを見かけ、牧草地の干し草の匂いを嗅ぐと、特別でかけがえのない時に包まれているように感じます。

毒ニンジンとノラニンジンがそこら中に生える季節がやってきました。だだっ広くて静かな牧草地に転がっている干し草ロールが見えます。針葉樹の向こう側には海が広がっています。ここにいると、磯の香りがどこからともなく漂ってきます。

干し草ロールは焦げたような色合いで、今すぐにでも食べられそうです。私の好きな夏の匂いである干し草の甘い香りがしてきます。

実は、刈りたての新鮮な感想した草の様子を写真に収めたかったのですが、逃してしまいました。まるで黄金の海の波のようにそれはそれは美しい光景でした。ところが、スマホを持っていかなかったので、写真に撮ることができませんでした。また次の機会に野原に出向くと、もうすでに干し草ロールが出来上がった後の光景でした。農家の方たちは仕事が早いですね。

そんな光景を見ていた主人が「太陽が輝いているうちに干し草を刈り取りなさい」という、有名な英語表現を教えてくれました。遅くならないうちにその機会を利用しなさい、とか、最良の結果を得るために条件が有利なうちに行動に移しなさいなどという意味合いらしいです。どうやら、この表現の通りに振り返ってみると、私はその機会を逃してしまったので、素敵な光景を写真を撮ることができなかったようです。残念ながら、その様子をカメラに収めることはできませんでしたが、とても美しい光景でした。

とても暑く、静かで、平和な空間です。

突然、トラックの音が聞こえてきました。そしてゆっくりとそれがこちらに近づいてくるのが見えました。干し草を積んだ農場のトラックがやってきます。ちょっとずつ進んでいます。後にいる車は辛抱強く徐行しています。

私の犬は、なぜかある特定の車のエンジンの音を聞くのが好きなので、立ち止まってその光景を眺めていました。なぜかエンジンの音が好きなのです。ドライバーさんがこちらに手を振ってくれたので、私たちも振り返しました。

そして、この特別感のあるアングルで干し草の写真を撮りました。新鮮で、信頼感があって、おいしそうで、大切なものです。農家の人たちが、農場や動物たちのために作業している姿を尊敬します。木の影が干し草の上に映っているのが素敵です。この写真から夏の空気、ゆっくり進むトラックのエンジンの音、干し草を美味しそうに食べる動物たちの顔が浮かんでくるのではないでしょうか。
