Full Of Things in Our Material World But...
Usually, I like to take pictures of nature. However, I sometimes enjoy capturing photos of materials. There are too many materials in our society, and I feel overwhelmed by them, even though they are just things. I don't know why, but I think materials also possess some kind of energy.
Every time I go to a big store, I am usually shocked by numerous objects sitting on the shelves. They may not necessarily find their owners, but there are many products. Our world is bizarre sometimes when I take photos of these items. If these products can't be purchased by anybody, what happens to them...
On the other hand, many people worldwide constantly need food and other necessities. "Why can't we just exchange or donate these things that are just sitting in stores to someone who needs them immediately?" Probably, almost all children ask similar questions to adults. I held similar types of questions when I was little.
Anyway, I enjoy taking pictures whenever I see products like this.
Look at these cakes... They look delicious but seem too sweet for me. These cakes are waiting for someone to eat them. I imagine a small mouse wishing to devour them behind the counter, like in a cartoon.
There are too many plastic Muskoka chairs at almost all home hardware stores here. These materials are very fragile, so people should purchase them almost every spring. Some people have locally crafted wooden Muskoka chairs, which are pretty strong. The image of yellow Muskoka chairs represents people's idea of a relaxing life in summer.
Many new toilets are sitting on the shelf at the store. Actually, I want to get one from here because our toilet is getting older. I really miss the Japanese washlet toilet. This type of toilet is very cold in winter and too sweaty in summer. Also, it's not easy to clean the bottom parts. I want to have a smoother-looking toilet. Additionally, I want to have a compost toilet if it's easy to maintain.
Wow... there are so many paintbrushes. I am amazed that people reform their houses pretty much by themselves. When we asked to order installers at the store, they said they could introduce some technicians, but they don't provide the services. In Japan, almost all home hardware stores have strong connections with technicians, or sometimes they have their own technicians.
Lighting! We purchased the ceiling fan this time. We selected the black one. My husband has to install it himself. In Japan, there are many rental apartments and houses, so attaching these lights is pretty simple and easy. However, we don't have a similar system here, so we have to install lighting each time.

普段は自然界の写真を撮るのが好きですが、ときどきこうした物の写真を撮るのも好きです。私たちの住む社会は数えきれないほどの物で溢れかえっています。例えただの物とはいえ、たまに圧倒されます。なぜかはわかりませんが、物であってもそれらが放つ何らかのエネルギーがあると思います。
大型店に行くと、 棚の上にびっしりと並んだ物たちを見て軽くショックを受けます。こんなにたくさんあるので、全ての商品の行き先が見つかるとは思えません。こういった写真を撮る時は奇妙な感覚を覚えます。これらの物たちが誰にも購入されずにずっと残り続けると、どうなるのでしょうか…
一方、世界中では常に食べ物や物資不足で困っている人たちがいます。「どうしてここにずっとある物たちを今必要としている人たちと交換したりあげることはできないのだろうか…」そういった疑問は多くの子供たちから大人へと投げかけられることだと思います。私も幼いときはそう思っていました。
とにかく、こういった物を眺めながら写真を撮るのが好きです。
ケーキたちをご覧ください。とってもおいしそうですが、私にはちょっと甘すぎるような気がします。ケーキは誰かに食べられるのを待っているのでしょうか。漫画に出てくるような小さなネズミが、カウンターの後ろから覗いて隙を狙っているのではないかと、ついつい想像してしまいます。
ホームセンターに並んでいるプラスチック製のマスコーカチェアの数の多さ…。このプラスチックの椅子はとても壊れやすく、毎春買い替えている人がいるようです。地元のアーティストさんは手作りで木製のマスコーカチェアを作成しています。木製の方が耐久性がいいと思います。黄色いマスコーカチェアは、リラックした夏の休暇のイメージだそうです。
棚の上に並んでいるトイレです。実は我が家のトイレは古くなってきたので新しいトイレが欲しいです。日本のウォシュレットが恋しいですね〜。このタイプのトイレは冬はひんやり冷たくて、夏は汗をかきます。それに下の入り組んだ部分の掃除が難しいです。もっとなめらかな見た目のデザインがいいです。手入れが簡単であればコンポーストのトイレもいいですね。
わあ…。ものすごい量のハケです。みなさん自分で家をリフォームする人が多いのがすごいなと思います。店で取り付けしてもらえるか尋ねたところ、技術者の紹介はできるが、特に責任を持って紹介や斡旋をしているわけではないとのこと。店でも専門の技術者は雇っていないそうです。日本では、ホームセンターに行くと必ずと言っていいくらい専門家や技術者につなげてもらえますよね。または店専属の技術者さんたちもいることも多いのではないでしょうか。
ずらりと並んだ電気です！ 今回は黒のシーリングファンを購入しました。主人が自分で取り付けをしてくれるそうです。日本では賃貸のアパートや家が多いので、電気周りは割と簡単に取り外して付け替えることができるような作りになっている家が多いと思います。この電気はほとんど元から取り付けをしなければならないので少々手間がかかりそうです。

Those are some pretty photos of a hardware store, one of my favorite kind of places.
That point of yours really caught my attention, nowadays we're surrounded by so many things, hardly any of them are bought by someone so they just stay till on the shelves almost screaming to get an owner and get out of there. I think it would be cool if those things that don´t get bought are transformed into something new, maybe that way they get to obtain an use.

I agree with you that transforming products into something new, instead of keeping them in stock indefinitely, is essential. Hybrid styles are definitely needed in our world. I often think that each family doesn't have to have one car, as the car just sits in front of our houses when not in use, or remains at the dealership if nobody buys it.
私も大型の店舗に行くと、圧倒的な数のものの量と色にしばらく欲しいものが何だったのかを忘れて呆然としてしまうことがあります。
でも、様々な製品はみんなよく考えて生み出されていて、もちろんもっとエコロジーに長く使うことも考えたいですけど、美しく新しいインダストリアル・デザインが次々と発表されることもまた好ましく思ったり、ジレンマがあります（笑）
コトさんの記事を読んで改めて思ったのは、確かに日本では「規格」が徹底されているので、電気部品や水道管の接続など、専門家に頼んで専門の道具で仕上げてもらった方がよいので、専門家の斡旋が通常になっているなぁということです。
専門家が無駄なく間違いなく仕上げてくれたら、壊れる確率も減って、実は長い目で見たらエコロジーなのかもしれないと感じました。
大型店は窓がなくてびっしり並ぶ商品の上には蛍光ライトが明るいので圧倒されますよね〜。職人さんが考えて作ったもの、または職人さんが使うための道具はただ眺めるだけでも魅力的ですよね。これを使って何ができあがるのかな？と想像するだけでも楽しい専門的な道具が置いてあってワクワクしますね。
エコの観点で考えると、いろんな思いが巡りますね。ジレンマがありますよね。私もです。専門家や技術者は本来長持ちする壊れにくい物を作るのが信念にあるような気がします。でも大企業は利益を上げるためには壊れやすい物を作らなくては売れないという概念の狭間で職人さんたちも大変ですよね。@aitommylrさんのキャンプ用品などを見ていると、質の良いお気に入りのものを購入したら長く愛用して大切に使うというのが伝わってきます。大量生産されてすぐ壊れるようなものを何度も買い替えるよりも大事なキャンプ用具を丁寧に使ったり、自分で選んだ材料でDIYをしたりすると、自然や物の大切さが身に染みるような気がしています。

私はよく考えて作られているキャンプ道具や、古い道具を直しながら使うのがとても好きで、合致する部品を探して手に入れて、使いやすく加工したり修理しています。
そういうのってホントに魅力的なんですよね。そして、道具を使いこなすことの面白みがわかってきて、もっと大切にしたり自分にとっての良さを追求できます。
今、買い替えを狙っている「長持ちはしない製品」にがっかりすることがありますが、そのような製品から将来は名品と呼ばれるものが生まれるのかもしれない…とも思ったりします。
溢れる物質世界で何を選ぶか、無理せずバランスよく考えたいなぁといつもいつも思っていて、コトさんのこの記事は改めてそれに気づかせてくれました！
