Finding a Dog Toy and Everyday Products

It was time to get a new dog toy and some supplies for my dog, so I explored a few pet stores the other day. In my area, there are at least three or four pet stores, even though sometimes there don’t seem to be enough stores for humans. That means there are many pet-friendly people living in this area. Also, in small shops, fancy stores, and farmers’ markets, there are often small pet sections. In addition, there are unique handmade pet products created by local artists.

I like to visit pet stores because it feels very right to me, and I feel happy watching cheerful toys and pet supplies. If I’m lucky, I get to meet dogs by chance. Some dogs are there for grooming, and others are just visiting the store with their owners. I like to greet these dogs. If I’m extra lucky, I sometimes bump into puppies. Puppies are so innocent and beautiful. I love spending time at pet stores.

In Japan, there are areas where dogs and cats are sold in pet stores. I totally disagree with this style. Some animal protection organizations are trying to stop it. I sometimes sign petitions, but this practice hasn’t disappeared yet. Hopefully, pet stores and breeders are at least maintaining healthy and safe conditions for all animals.

I often watch videos about dog shelters. I know it’s just a small part of animal protection, but people are trying so hard to support and protect animals. I especially like watching shelters where dogs choose their foster families (humans) by themselves. When the dogs select their new owners, they look just as happy as the humans. Some people cry deeply during these precious moments. I think not everyone gets chosen, because there are usually many candidates compared to the number of dogs.

It’s wonderful to let dogs decide on their new owners. Interestingly, dogs often choose humans who resemble them. For example, a small dog with fuzzy hair might choose a person with fuzzy hair. A tall, slim dog might choose a tall, slim person. I think their matching sense is incredibly high-level. Dogs don’t care about appearance, occupation, status, age, or gender. They have an amazing instinct for choosing humans.

Look at my dog’s old toy! It was stuffed and tough. However, my dog tore it down, bit it, and reduced it to this size. This is what I call “customizing.” My dog loves to customize his toys like this. Sometimes he looks a bit sad when he sees broken toys, but most of the time, he looks proud of himself for customizing them.

I think this toy reached the end of its life this month. He needed a new toy, so I chose the same brand called “Tough.” This brand makes the best stuffed toys. I picked a teddy bear toy with an elegant pattern on its body. It looked like a classic luxury brand such as Coach or Louis Vuitton. I’ve never bought those kinds of brands for myself, but I thought this toy looked very cool.

My dog loved the teddy bear, named “Teddy,” so much that he didn’t want to leave it. He carries it everywhere he goes. However, the pattern quickly disappeared because he licked most of it. He also ripped some parts, so I stitched them yesterday. My dog watched me very carefully while I was fixing it. It’s funny! He’s okay with damaging it himself, but he doesn’t want anyone else to damage it.

I also bought another toy for daily use, a puzzle toy for treats. I’ll give it to him sometime soon. I visited another pet store that sells almost all kinds of animal food, birds, horses, dogs, cats, and more. I liked their parking sign. Yes, I can definitely park my car here.

I also wanted to buy a new headcollar called a Halti for walking my dog. This product is very useful. My dog is usually gentle, but he is huge. When he gets excited, he can pull me easily. When he wears the Halti, he immediately stops pulling. It makes controlling him much easier. This mysterious product quickly reduces stress for both humans and dogs. The old one was too worn out to use, so I decided to buy a new one. I saw other brands, but this one is the best so far. It’s not cheap, but it lasts a long time.

I also like looking at fish in pet stores like this. As I mentioned before, there are no dogs or cats for sale here, only shelter dogs and pets visiting with their owners, but sometimes I see small animals like fish, birds, hamsters, or rabbits. Honestly, I feel a bit uncomfortable seeing small animals kept in limited spaces. However, they appear healthy and are very beautiful.

I didn’t buy these dog cookies, but they looked so cute that I took photos of them. I noticed that many dog toys and cookies have smiling faces like these. Anyway, these faces make me smile, just like dogs make me smile all the time.

犬のおもちゃと日々使うもの探し

新しい犬のおもちゃや日用品を買う時期だったので、先日いくつかのペットショップを巡りました。私の住んでいる地域には、人間向けのお店は少ないと感じることがある一方で、少なくとも３〜４軒のペットショップがあります。それだけ、この地域にはペット好きな人が多く住んでいるということなのだと思います。小さなお店や少しおしゃれなお店、ファーマーズマーケットにも、ちょっとしたペットコーナーがあり、個性的なハンドメイド作家さんのペット用品も見かけます。

私はペットショップを訪れるのが好きです。楽しそうなおもちゃや用品を見ていると、心が自然と落ち着き、幸せな気持ちになります。運が良ければ、偶然犬たちに出会うこともあります。トリミングに来た犬たちや、飼い主さんと一緒に来ている犬たちです。そんな犬たちに挨拶するのが好きです。さらに運が良いと、子犬に出会うこともあります。子犬はとても純粋で愛らしく、見ているだけで心が和みます。そんな風にペットショップで過ごす時間はとても気分が良いです。

日本では、犬や猫が販売されているペットショップの形態がありますが、私はその在り方に違和感を感じています。動物保護団体の中には、この仕組みをなくそうと活動しているところもあり、私も時々署名に参加していますが、残念ながらまだ完全にはなくなっていません。せめて、ペットショップやブリーダーが、すべての動物にとって健康で安全な環境を守っていることを願っています。

私はよく、犬のシェルターに関する動画を観ます。ほんの一部かもしれませんが、人々が懸命に動物を支え、守ろうとしている姿に心を打たれます。特に好きなのは、犬自身が里親（人）を選ぶシェルターの映像です。犬が新しい家族を選んだ瞬間、その表情は人間と同じくらい幸せそうで、そのような光景に感動のあまり涙を流す人もいます。候補者の数が犬より多いため、すべての人が選ばれるわけではないのだと思います。

犬に新しい飼い主を選ばせるというのは、とても素敵な考え方だと思います。興味深いことに、犬は自分と似た雰囲気の人を選ぶことが多いようです。たとえば、ふわふわの毛をした小さな犬が、同じように柔らかな雰囲気の髪の人を選んだり、背が高くスリムな犬が、同じく背が高く細身の人を選んだりします。犬の「マッチング能力」は本当に驚くほど高いと感じます。犬は外見や職業、立場、年齢、性別といったことを気にしません。ただ直感で、人を選んでいるのだと思います。

写真は、私の犬の古いおもちゃです。もともとは中に綿が詰まっていてとても丈夫でしたが、噛んだり引き裂いたりして、こんな形になりました。うちではこれを「カスタム」と呼んでいます。彼はこうしておもちゃを自分仕様にするのが大好きなようです。壊れたおもちゃを見て少し寂しそうな顔をすることもありますが、たいていはやり遂げたというような誇らしげな表情をしています。

古いおもちゃは、今月で役目を終えたように思います。新しいおもちゃが必要になり、同じ「Tough」というブランドのものを選びました。このブランドのぬいぐるみは本当に優秀です。私は、クラシックな模様が入ったテディベアのおもちゃを選びました。まるでコーチやルイ・ヴィトンのような高級ブランドのデザインみたいで、とても格好良く見えました。自分用にはそういったブランド品を買ったことはありませんが、このおもちゃはとても魅力的でした。

テディと名付けたこのテディベアを、私の犬はとても気に入り、どこへ行くにも持ち歩いています。ただ、ほとんど舐めてしまったので模様はすぐに消えてしまい、一部は破れてしまいました。昨日、私が縫い直している間、彼はじっとそばで様子を見ていました。自分が壊すのはいいけれど、他の誰かが壊すのは嫌、という感じです。

普段使い用に、トリーツを入れて遊べるパズルトイも購入しました。近いうちに渡そうと思っています。また、鳥や馬、犬、猫など、さまざまな動物のフードを扱っている別のペットショップにも行きました。そこの駐車場の看板がとても気に入りました。はい、まさに私はここに駐車できますね。

散歩用にHalti（ハルティ）というヘッドカラーも新しく購入しました。これはとても便利な商品です。私の犬は普段は穏やかですが、体が大きいので、興奮すると簡単に引っ張られてしまいます。ハルティをつけると、驚くほどすぐに引っ張るのをやめます。人と犬、双方のストレスを一気に減らしてくれる不思議な道具です。以前使っていたものが古くなったため、買い替えました。他のブランドも見ましたが、今のところこれが一番だと感じています。安くはありませんが、長く使えるので納得しています。

ペットショップで魚を見るのも好きです。ここでは犬や猫の販売はなく、シェルターの犬や来店中のペットだけですが、魚や鳥、ハムスター、ウサギなどの小動物を見かけることはあります。正直なところ、限られた空間に押し込められている小動物たちを見ると、少し心がざわつくこともあります。それでも、彼らは元気そうにしていました。

この犬用クッキーは買いませんでしたが、とても可愛かったので写真を撮りました。なぜ犬用のおもちゃやお菓子には、こんなふうに笑顔の顔が多いのだろう、とよく思います。でも、その笑顔を見ると、犬がいつも私を笑顔にしてくれるのと同じように、私も自然と笑顔になります。

皆さんに、メリークリスマス！そして、苦しみの中にいるすべての人が、少しでも早く穏やかな時間を持てますように。特に、戦地にいる方々に、心から平和を願っています。
