Day Trip to Acheron, The River of the Underworld
One of the best things about living in Greece (especially in the Epirus region) is that the distances are so small that with just a short drive, you can reach places that feel like they're taken straight out of movies or fairytales!
One such place is Acheron, a river located in the western part of Epirus, known for its crystal-clear waters and of course, for its mythological importance!
In Greek mythology, the Acheron is a river associated with the underworld, often called the "river of woe" or "river of pain". It's one of the five rivers that flow through Hades, the realm of the dead. The Acheron is famously known as the river that the ferryman Charon would transport the souls of the deceased across, taking them from the world of the living to the underworld.

While living near the sea and hitting the beach definitely helps with cooling down during summer, after a few weeks it kind of loses its "magic" and starts to feel like a routine. Don't get me wrong, I love going to the beach, but I do need some chill spot diversification every now and then hehe!
Luckily, there are many dope places to visit around the beach house, and our road trip this time was to Acheron River, located just a 45-minute drive from home! Perfect for a quick escape!
We hopped in the car, drove to Acheron, and the moment we stepped out, we could feel it... the cold breeze hitting our faces while it was still hot outside! Without wasting time, we grabbed our stuff and followed the trail along the river to find a nice shady spot to chill and swim.
Trail view
What I loved about Acheron is its weird nature! It had zero consistency! Dust, long vines, old trees, rivers, jungles, bridges, lil secret beaches... felt like I was tripping haha!
Look at some of the awesome spots we passed by 👇
It took us around 10 minutes to reach the end of the riverside trail. The trail continues through the river for those who want a more thrilling adventure (it’s a 7-hour route), but since our time was limited, we just chose to chill and not explore further this time.
After securing a shady, dope spot, it was finally time to relax, drink a couple cold ones and swim in the crystal-clear waters of Acheron — one of the coldest rivers in Greece (5°–7°C)!
Won’t lie, it was hard to enjoy such cold water at first, but damn it was refreshing! Felt like I was doing ice baths haha!
We spent a good 4 hours just listening to nature, swimming, and watching wildlife and tourists go by haha. It was fun!

Everything good comes to an end, so around 6 PM we packed our stuff, walked the trail back to the car and drove home feeling refreshed and recharged!
Even though I’ve been to Acheron plenty of times, it still feels like the first time every time! The canyon is majestic, nature is pure, water is unreal, and the ancient myth adds this legendary vibe to the whole place.
If you’re in Greece this summer, add Acheron to your travel list and you won’t regret it!
Happy travels everyone!
