River Kern and Lake Isabella. Unbearable Lightness of Hiking. US Southwest Trip Day 11 [POL/ENG].

Jedenasty dzień naszej podróży po południowo-zachodnich USA był pierwszym... bez żadnej atrakcji turystycznej. Nie było żadnego parku narodowego, nie było miejsca przyciągającego turystów. Była przyjemna wędrówka wzdłuż rzeki Kern i nad jeziorem Isabella (Kalifornia). Taka "nieznośna lekkość wędrowania" (parafrazując tytuł filmu Milana Kundery).

The 11th day of our trip across the US Southwest was the first... without any tourist attraction. We haven't visited any national park or a place were tourists flock. It was a pleasant hike along the river Kern and Lake Isabella, California. Call it "An unbearable lightness of hiking" (paraphrasing the title of Milan Kundera film).

Z bazy w Bakersfield pojechaliśmy nad jezioro Isabella. Jest tylko jedna możliwość - droga CA 178 wijąca się wzdłuż rzeki Kern. Po drodze zatrzymaliśmy się by przejść fragment szlaku Kern River Trail, prowadzącego równolegle do rzeki i drogi. Szlak zaczęliśmy od... pokonania  metalowego płotka przegradzającego ścieżkę. Przejście było jak najbardziej legalne, tuż za płotkiem jest znak informujący o szlaku.

We drove from our base in Bakersfield to Lake Isabella. There is only one way - California HWY 178, which threads along the river Kern. We stopped halfway to hike a fragment of the Kern River Trail. We started by negotiating a metal fence that stood across the footpath. The passing was legit, a trail sign was right beyond the fence.

Ten szlak to z jednej strony nic spektakularnego, a z drugiej bardzo przyjemna wędrówka w miejscu, gdzie dociera mało turystów. Nie mamy z tego szlaku żadnego super zdjęcia. Ale dla mnie był to przyjemny spacer - taki trochę bez celu.

This trail is nothing spectacular on one hand side, but it offered a pleasant stroll in a place where few tourist reach. We don't have any 'wow' photo from the trail. Nevertheless, I found it very pleasant and relaxing, even if there wasn't any particular destination.

Poszliśmy około 3km w jedną stronę i wróciliśmy tą samą ścieżką. Ot, zwykły szlak, nic specjalnego. Czasem jednak przyjemności znajdujemy w rzeczach zwykłych, nie rzucających się w oczy.

We hiked some 3km up the trail and returned the same path. Nothing special there. Sometimes, however, pleasure is found in the ordinary.

Celem naszej wycieczki było jezioro Isabella. To sztuczny zbiornik, spiętrzający wody rzeki Kern. Ładne miejsce, ale nikt nie pojedzie tam specjalnie z Europy. Zdjęcia jak te poniżej, mógłbym zrobić znacznie bliżej domu.

Our destination was lake Isabella (the lake, we bypassed a town with the same name). It is an reservoir behind a dam on the river Kern. It is a beautiful place, but no one would go all the way from Europe to see it. I could have taken pictures like below much closer to home.

Wybrałem krótki szlak z Hungry Gulch Campground, prowadzący obok dawnej kopalni złota Coso Mine na szczyt Isabella Peak. Moja wersja to kombinacja dwóch oficjalnych szlaków.

I chose a short trail from Hungry Gulch Campground to former gold mine Coso Mine and the Isabella Peak. My version was a combination of the two available trails.

Na szlaku poznaliśmy historię 19-wiecznej gorączki złota w tym rejonie. Co ciekawe, później spotkaliśmy współczesnych poszukiwaczy, którzy w rzece Kern wypłukiwali piasek, szukając złotych grudek.

We learnt about the 19th century Gold Ruch in this region. Interestingly, we later encountered contemporary gold seekers, who used the old school methods to sift sand in search for golden nuggets.

Coso Mine by Lake Isabella

Na szlaku byliśmy sami. Po wyjściu na najwyższy punkt, mieliśmy ładny widok na jezioro Isabella, otoczone górami będącymi częścią łańcucha Sierra Nevada. Widok ładny, ale nic spektakularnego. To była esencja tego dnia - przyjemna wędrówka do miejsc, które nie są na trasie zagranicznych turystów.

We are alone on the trail. When we reached the peak, we were offered a nice view of Lake Isabella, surrounded by Sierra Nevada mountains. Nice, but nothing stunning. That the was the essence of the day - pleasant, but nothing that foreign tourist would flock to.

Dowiedzieliśmy się także co dzieje się z wodami rzeki Kern - dlaczego nie docierają do Bakersfield. Poniżej jeziora rzeka wygląda na zasobną w wodę. Ale powyżej Bakersfield ciągną się sady owocowe, głównie pomarańcze i mandarynki. Ogrodnicy pobierają z rzeki tyle wody, że w mieście zostaje suche koryto. To wynik suszy panującej na tym terenie od kilku lat.

We also learnt what was going on with the waters of river Kern. Just below Lake Isabella, the river looked pretty good. But its waters do not reach Bakersfield further down. The culprits are orange groves. Their owners take all the water they can, leaving nothing for the city. It's an effect of a serious drought a couple of years long.

Orchards - the reason why there's no water in river Fern in Bakersfield, CA
