CELEBRATING AFRICA: A UNIQUE WEEKEND EXPERIENCE

Spot me

I was supposed to have made this post last weekend, or probably during the week, but then I had to wait for my friend to send me the pictures since we used his camera for the majority of the shoot. I specifically wanted us to take the pictures with a digital camera, because of the importance of this event. I needed it to be memorable, so maintaining quality was the goal for me. Though it was a low-resolution camera, it was quite better than the ones our phones produced.

ABOUT THE EVENT

This event was targeted at celebrating Africa and our culture. As you can see the beauty in culture was expressed in dressing, food, dance, and art... To mention but a few. Again I went last week with my team of actors and we presented a beautiful piece, telling the story of our cultural heritage and the beauty in our diversity.

MY EXPERIENCE

Because of the uniqueness of this event, my team and I decided to stay back to enjoy the show. It was the food for me lol, we ate so much that we forgot to take photos when the food came in. I ate from only two Nigerian tribes namely; Delta's Ukodo (yam and pepper soup with different kinds of meat) and rivers crab soup and eba. Unlike my colleagues who ate from nearly all tribes and parts of Africa that were represented... Some even went home with running stomachs at the end of the day lol. I was offered a Hausa delicacy that I rejected after tasting, It's a mixture of rice (overcooked rice) With milk and other things I can't remember, I only remember not knowing what to take of the taste lol.

The dance was another thing I enjoyed, I mean what Is celebrating Africa without a dance. I mostly enjoyed the Akwa Ibom, Calaba, South Africa, Delta, and Igbo Dancers as I danced along with them (on my seat though lol). It was indeed beautiful to see those magnificent dance display by the Calaba dancers... I was too into the program that I didn't take many pictures of activities.

MY THEATER SHOWDOWN

It was as though everyone was waiting for what we had to present as a theater (not to brag) and we had been doing marathon rehearsals for the past two weeks just for this event. And we definitely crushed it ending everything with a dance. The dance part was the hardest to perfect during the rehearsals because of people like myself who weren't good at dancing, however, it was fun. Although I made mistakes during our dance and in other not to make it noticeable, I found a way to go to the back so the camera wouldn't see the nonsense I was doing in the name of dance.

The drama was all about a prince who was accused of bringing a strange idol from a neighboring community, I acted the character of the major villain who accused the prince because of selfish interest to claim the throne but was defeated when the prince was able to claim his innocence through the help of some chiefs from that community that testified of how the prince aim was actually to unite both communities that had been previously in conflict, and what was claimed to be an idol was a symbol of the peace the princes father was not able to bring in his time.

From my experience at this event, I learned that Indeed Africa is blessed with culture, and though it was a religious gathering, but I think it's something Africa should celebrate as a continent because it's part of our beauty.

MOST PHOTOS HAVE ALSO BEEN POSTED HERE FOR REFERENCE PURPOSES
