On several occasions I have written about the Semi-arid of the Torres Municipality of Lara State, Venzuela, but from its beauty and greenery in times of rain, this time I describe it from the warmth of summer.

And it is that those of us who live in the Semi-arid are used to counting the rainy days of the year, generally in the months of April, May, September and December, although now they vary a lot due to climate change.

Most of the inhabitants depend on lagoons and artificial lakes to care for their animals, so they anxiously await the rains to replenish their water reserves.

That is our case, the prolonged drought means a concern, since our water reservoirs are small and dry quickly.

This year 2023, the rainy days have been really few, it shows in the vegetation toasted by the relentless sun and the wind does not let up, drying out each plant that resists and waits for the rains in its effort to live.

The drought is so great that I feel compassion for wild animals, I understand that they are adapted to the semi-arid, but even so it is impossible not to reflect on where they eat and drink water. At home it has always been a custom to place water and fruits, so iguanas, foxes and birds arrive like: turpial, gonzalitos, woodpeckers, canaries, large and small pigeons, cristofué, paraulatas and cockroaches.

The resistance of the vegetation is amazing, trees like the Yabo, the Cachimbo and the Vera are flourishing despite the drought.

A few days ago I was moved to hear hummingbirds in a flowery Vera, looking carefully for a long time I could see no less than 10 little birds fluttering from flower to flower, is it God's work protecting his animals in the face of food shortages?

Everything looks different, they are the colors of summer, the aloe vera are thin, the cacti opaque and dry, the bushes and trees lose their leaves, exposing the nests of the little birds.

At home, work increases, especially that related to animals, these days it is necessary to look for water in neighboring farmhouses and feed the goats and sheep, many of them are pregnant and their attention is vital.

While waiting for the rain we see the clouds go by, just as there are sunny days there are also cloudy days in which it seems that it is about to rain, suddenly a few droplets fall and that's it, we have to settle for the spectacular work of art in the one that becomes the blue sky with its large gray and white clouds, at the end of the afternoon it is the sun and the accumulated water that play to dye the sky with the most beautiful twilights, thus we are filled with the hope that whispers: soon it will rain and we will see our semi-arid flourish and flourish again.

La mayoría de los habitantes dependen de lagunas y lagos artificiales para la atención de sus animales, por lo que esperan ansiosamente las lluvias para la reposición de sus reservas de agua.

Ese es nuestro caso, la sequía prolongada significa una preocupación, ya que nuestros reservorios de agua son pequeños y secan rápidamente.

Este año 2023, los días de lluvia han sido realmente pocos, se nota en la vegetación tostada por el implacable sol y el viento no da tregua resecando cada planta que en su empeño por vivir resiste y espera por las lluvias.

Es tanta la sequía que siento compasión por los animales silvestres, comprendo que están adaptados al semiárido, pero aun así es imposible no reflexionar acerca de donde comen y toman agua. En casa ha sido siempre una costumbre colocarles agua y frutas, así que llegan iguanas, zorros y aves como: turpial, gonzalitos, carpinteros, canarios, palomas grandes y pequeñas, cristofué, paraulatas y cucaracheros.

La resistencia de la vegetación es asombrosa, árboles como el Yabo, el Cachimbo y la Vera están floreciendo a pesar de la sequía.

Hace unos días me emocionó escuchar colibríes en una Vera florecida, mirando atentamente por largo rato pude observar no menos de 10 avecillas revoloteando de flor en flor, ¿acaso es la obra de Dios protegiendo a sus animales ante la escasez de alimentos?

Todo se ve distinto, son los colores del verano, los aloe vera están delgados, los cactus opacos y secos, los arbustos y árboles pierden sus hojas quedando al descubierto los nidos de los pajaritos.

En casa aumenta el trabajo, sobre todo lo relacionado con los animales, en estos días se hace necesaria la búsqueda de agua en caseríos vecinos y darles de tomar a las cabras y ovejas, muchas de ellas son gestantes y es vital su atención.

En la espera de la lluvia vemos pasar las nubes, así como hay días soleados también hay días nublados en los que parece que está a punto de llover, de repente caen unas gotitas y es todo, nos toca conformamos con la espectacular obra de arte en la que se convierte el cielo azul con sus grandes nubes grises y blancas, al final de la tarde es el sol y el agua acumulada las que juegan a teñir el cielo con los más hermosos crepúsculos, así nos llenamos de la esperanza que susurra: pronto lloverá y veremos nuevamente nuestro semiárido reverdecer y florecer.
