Mountain Therapy

Why do we deliberately put ourselves into physical stress, inflicting muscle aches, sometimes catching a cold due to unpleasant weather, and worse, starving without appetite (yes that's a horror for me) ?

On top of these, more not-so-good scenarios, which actually happened are:

  1. Getting hangry and arguing during the hike

  2. Hyperacidity due to prolonged fasting

  3. Holding my pee

  4. Leaving the other in the trail

Trust me, it's not about losing weight or pure hobby for us. Each hike is different; especially when you are with your partner, there would always something to discover about each other along the way - good and bad. One thing is for sure when the hike is over though - the sense of fulfillment emanates more positivity, even makes your bond stronger, and you, a more mature person.

When I am not chanting while hiking, I listen to the sound of the forest, even it it's just rustling wind. I pay attention to my train of thoughts, it's almost meditative. At times when Kevin initiates a one-way conversation (and he knows I am not a fan of talking while hiking), I just listen to him and grunt from time to time.

The bad cases I mentioned above tend to happen when we are unprepared. So, we make sure we got emergency munchies, have a good headspace before starting the hike, and even got myself a shewee. 😂 I will probably blog about it later haha.

Hiking this beautiful mountain, Mount Nikko-Shirane, was very memorable to me, because I enjoyed every minute of it. I did not need distraction. Maybe my hormones were also balanced that day, lol. Seriously, it felt like the mountain embraced us the moment we entered that shrine at the trailhead. Before we knew it, there we were, at the top of this marvelous mountain, awed at the otherworldly view that nature delicately designed for the ones who dare to look. One would easily forget the chaotic world down below. Up there, perfection existed.

The view of Goshiki pond (also called five-color pond) was nothing but spectacular. If not for the strong winds, we would have stayed longer (it felt like -5 deg up there). We took a loop trail via a smaller pond with wooden planks on the way down. We stayed there for a bit, but not too long to cool down.

We talked about a lot of things (surprisingly for me to be talking while catching my breath), and did not notice we were already back at the trailhead, where the cafes, restaurants and foot onsen were. It was about noon, the place was decorated for Halloween, kids running around cheerfully and young couples taking photos of colorful trees full of excitement. Still high on adrenaline, we decided to go to a bigger onsen before a delightful drive back to Tokyo.

So my dear friends, I hope you won't get tired looking at mountain photos and instead, feel a sense of calmness like we did that day. Nature is free, let's have a bite of it. ♥️ xoxo
