Our Second Visit To The Basilica: A December Trip To Hungary.

I've been busy lately, between family, work and everyday routines.

I had free time yesterday to make my blog. Because before I always found myself constantly saying, I’ll post later on my day off. Aside from that, the cold weather makes me want to stay in bed all day, watching series, wrapped in my blanket and heated mattress and just enjoy the day off. That was exactly how my days went recently.

Add to that the cold weather that makes you want to stay in bed all day, wrapped in blankets, watching movies and resting your mind. That was exactly how my days went recently. But today, I finally decided it was time to share one of our beautiful memories from December — our trip to the Basilica in Hungary.

Aya and I visited the Basilica for the second time. Last July 2023 was our last visit and it felt just as special again.

The morning drive was beautiful and I enjoyed seeing the beauty of Hungary on the way to the Basilica. We prepared our drinks and snacks every time we went on our trip. Smooth way going to the Basilica.

When we arrived at our first destination, we saw and walked slowly toward the massive structure. We were once again amazed by its grand architecture, the Basilica stands proud and tall, and its impressive dome too. I was once again amazed by its grand and detailed stonework. What we were excited about during our trip, the dome lookout in the Basilica. It's our first time because last year there were too many people.

First, my husband paid for our entrance fee and we went inside. I already feel a sense of calm even before stepping inside.

The entrance fee depends on which floor you want to visit and the main church is free of charge.

The Basilica's multi-level design includes the following.

⛪-1 Level: Crypt

It is the underground burial chambers or vaults of the main priest and canon’s burial place.

📌The tomb belongs to János Csernoch, a cardinal and Archbishop of Esztergom.

It was our second time to visit the underground. The design was simple yet powerful. Those stone walls and arched ceilings gave a sacred feeling.

It made me think about the legacy, life and importance of faith. Even the kids noticed how different it felt compared to the bright and grand upper church. It became not just a sightseeing trip, but also a meaningful family moment.

⛪ 0 Level: Liturgical Space.

It is the main and side altars. With all the sculptures, painting, shop and entrance to the Cathedral Treasury.

When I stepped inside, I immediately drew my eyes upward. It's been two years already and still the Basilica restoration work continues.

The right side inside the Basilica is under construction but still we can enjoy seeing the beautiful painting, statues and stunning architecture design inside the Basilica.

And of course you cannot ignore how stunning the high ceilings are. Decorated with gold details, gentle colors and elaborate designs that made everyone stop and simply look up to admire.

No matter where I look, every corner reveals meticulous craftsmanship.

Another stunning feature is the Basilica's majestic grand organ.
Its tall, blue pipes stood proudly inside.

The Basilica felt majestic, stunning and peaceful.

⛪1 Level: The Basilica's Treasury

My husband and kids first came into the treasury. When I went inside, near the entrance was the liturgical instruments made of gold and I took a photo of it. To my surprise the security approached and talked to me in Hungarian. My husband was scared of what happened, they talked and just said no photos and videos were allowed. I did not see the signage that said it's not allowed.

The objects of the Cathedral Treasury are outstanding masterpieces of a particular era. It is a great part of Hungarian history.

After seeing those liturgical instruments. Outside was a detailed architectural model of the Esztergom Basilica or they call its Hungarian Vatican and its surrounding buildings in Hungary.

On the wall, there are portraits of cardinals or bishops with the text CAPUT, MATER ET MAGISTRA. And translates to "Head, Mother and Teacher."

⛪2 Level: The Panoráma View Hall.

We enjoyed the stunning view of the Danube River. Aside from the beautiful view there's a Panoráma Café and offers refreshment to guests.

⛪ 3 Level: The Dome Observatory.

We made our way to the top of the Basilica, and it was our first time with Aya. Every step going to the top was worth it and just be careful because the spiral stairs. We went up slowly so as not to feel dizzy.

The dome lookout was a highlight of our trip and the panoramic view was breathtaking. Added the cold air was refreshing and gave me a sense of peace.

It was a moment to pause, breathe deeply, and simply appreciate the moment.

Our December trip to the Esztergom Basilica was simple,unforgettable and beautiful. A gentle reminder that sometimes, slowing down is exactly what we need.
