From Waiting to Wandering: A Stroll Through The Slovakia’s Oldest City Nitra And Unexpected Hilltop Surprise.
We went to Nitra last year in July to visit one of my husband’s close friends. He invited us to watch their concert in Nitra. The concert will start at 6 pm and since we arrived a little earlier than expected. My husband suggested that instead of just waiting around, we should take a walk to Pribinovo Square, a historic square in Nitra and is located below the Nitra Castle.
As we drive in Nitra, a charming European street with beautiful architectural design, painted in pastel and warmed colored buildings and timeless design. Nitra is one of the oldest cities in Slovakia and it is described as a city where faith and history come together.
When we arrived and my husband parked near the square, we came to see his friend and we didn’t expect that we would also have time and chance to discover the beautiful city of Nitra.
Walking towards the charming Pribinovo Square it feels like taking a breath of fresh air. It was a quick and perfect spot to pause and appreciate Nitra’s timeless charm. The sky above was bright blue and dotted with fluffy white clouds was perfect. The path below, a mix of cobblestones and paving and we were walking through history. A few stone benches offered just what we needed like this—resting, gazing, and simply enjoying the view.
Walking around, every corner reveals another detail of the architecture’s timeless beauty. We were stepping through a majestic archwayand its like a portal from the past to discovery the beautiful place. It was like crossing into another time and discovering the history of Nitra.
Rising proudly in the heart of the Nitra city, its crown jewel the Nitra Castle. It is a grand landmark that brings together the Katedrála svätého Emeráma also known as Cathedral of St. Emmeram, the bishop’s residence, and enduring fortifications. The green domed tower can be seen from afar and the guiding eyes and footsteps toward the hilltop.
The moment we stepped inside, the church revealed its breathtaking interior and crafted with timeless beauty. We only have a quick look and a few snaps because the mass will start soon.

Statue of St. John of Nepomuk, often found near churches or on bridges in Central European towns like Nitra.
Atop the hill, one of the first sights is a grand Marian Plague Column (Mariánsky stĺp) which is located on the southern slope of the castle hill in Nitra and a a significant Baroque sculpture . The High Baroque column is the largest sculpture in the city and was built in 1750 by the sculptor Martin Vögerl and to commemorate the great plague epidemics that struck Nitra in 1710 and 1739.
Our steps eventually brought us to the bronze statue of Pope John Paul II. It is standing proudly with both dignity and calm within the castle courtyard. And the statue adds the spiritual layer of the city's landmark. .And the monument marks as a reminder of the Pope John Paull II historic visit to Nitra city and his visit happened on June 30, 1995. The statue stands as a symbol of Pope John Paul II's humility and love to his people. And it also stands for his lasting connection to the Slovak people and legacy of faith. Our little exploration to the city of Nitra was brief and it allowed us to experience the timeless charm and heritage.
We realized that beauty can be felt even in a short visit. And it can leave a lasting impression. We really appreciate the meaningful hours of exploration. On our way to see my husband’s friend, we were thankful for my husband's decision. We spend our spare time with this little adventure and moments to discover something meaningful.
Nitra City holds treasures for anyone willing to explore. From the heart of the city, the castle, the cathedral, or simply enjoying a quiet walk, the charming city has a way of making you slow down and reflect.
