A Simple Day Turned Busy And Plans Change: The Day We Made Kapustnica.

Yesterday was an ordinary day and errand of the day a quick grocery trip. My husband and I went to the grocery store together. Aya was still at school for her activities and after she will go home by bus. When it comes to paying for the groceries is always my responsibility.

We wanted to go to Kaufland, but when we saw how crowded the parking area was. And we decided to check out Lidl. In Lidl, the crowd was light and so we moved through the aisles without any trouble. As we grabbed the items we needed for home and we kept talking. After grocery shopping, our next stop was Nay, a shop full of appliances and tech stuff. While pushing the cart, he told me his friend dropped off the cabbages to his . To his surprise it was delivered whole cabbages. He was tired from work and a mix of frustration, he couldn’t believe it at first. What happened in their conversation, it was all clear it would not be delivered as a whole cabbages.

The 30 kilos cabbages were already in the car. Time was ticking because we needed to check the machine for cutting.

That’s what we bought the usual items- vegetables, meat, rice, and other basic essentials. My husband fell in line at the counter. Then slowly he put the things on the counter and I will pay for it. After paying for the groceries, we went directly to the Nay store. He found the machine and quickly went home. Aya was at home already and the time was so fast. We didn't notice it was almost 6 in the evening. From town to our home it took 30 minutes, my husband drove home quickly.

Aya has an initiative, if still we were not at home or even we call you that we will come home late. She will prepare her food and eat already. Our rule anthem- 6in the evening dinner and 3 in the evening sleep time. Even weekends are no exception. Call me strict but I want her to have more time to sleep because when she gets older and asking for more sleep. For sure it's less than 8 hours of her sleeping.

Finally at home, Aya helped us with the things we brought from the store. Then my husband prepared and cleaned the machine. He needs to cut the cabbages or kapusta in Slovak. He needed it for making kapustnica- a traditional fermented cabbage dish that is popular here in Slovakia. If his friend had already cut and ready for fermentation, no need to buy the machine. My husband bought more cabbages and he will give them to our parents and close friends.

The machine and us were ready. We decided to eat our dinner when we finished it all. My husband cut the cabbage into quarters and I’m in charge of cutting it using the machine. At first I found it cool and I was easy- just push and pull. The air was filled with the crisp and smell of freshly cut cabbage. shredded cabbage was ready for the next step — turning it into kapustnica. My husband poured salt over the layers, pressed them down firmly. And when all cabbages were cut and sealed the barrel tightly.
Both of us were tired from our day but proud. We cleaned up, ate our dinner and prepared to sleep. My husband says next time, he’ll make sure to always message his friend to remind cut the cabbages.

It’s part of life that sometimes misunderstandings happen. What matters most is how we handle them, better understanding next time and move on.
