Sun, Sand, and Silence: Exploring Kokkini Hani’s Forgotten Camp

summercamp.jpg

People destroy faster than nature forgets. I visited the old summer camp in Kokkini Hani yesterday, and it stands as a witness to both. Forgotten, abandoned, but also vandalized brutally, it stands as a forgotten promise to happiness. Laughter from children still echoed from the past; and I hoped I was the only one to hear them there.

What i did was trespassing yesterday, but I do think it was something wrong. Especially after seeing all the destruction done to this beautiful piece of property owned by our municipality.

A large property, that lands directly on a sandy beach.

I visited a place that once held joy, laughter, and carefree summer days.

Now, the (not so) old summer camp lies in ruins. I was sorry to realize that vandalism was evident throughout the place; I read that people addicted to drugs had been there, and this made me very skeptical about leaving the place very soon.

The first thing I saw when entering from a secret, hidden and open spot, was small hills full of flowers and happy bees flying around!

https://youtube.com/shorts/M6OhoSqLsuEIMG_9007.jpeg

Bees were buzzing and tamarisks were generously offering their shadow to the unseen ghosts of the past

IMG_9072.jpegIMG_9005.jpegIMG_9011.jpeg

I felt the calmness and the serene wonder of nature's silence.
I wondered around, without knowing what I would see next.

Many of the people I know had visited this summer camp (not me)

IMG_9009.jpeg

I wanted to visit this place for sometime now, but the reason I did it yesterday, I think, was because of these cloud formation.

IMG_9012.jpeg

The first building I noticed was this one. It immediately caught my attention as it was burnt out and I could clearly see that there were no windows and no roof. I made sure to visit it later and moved on.

IMG_9015.jpegIMG_9017.jpegIMG_9016.jpeg

I started to smell nature and at the same time see details that go me worried.

Broken lamps, trash on the ground, broken glasses at the buildings around...

IMG_9038.jpegIMG_9039.jpegIMG_9037.jpeg

All buildings were open, their windows were broken and it seemed as if everything inside was either broken or stolen.

IMG_9021.jpeg

I went forward towards a small forest that I saw in front of me. I was wondering if anyone else was at the moment there; Should I be afraid? The road was far away so I dont think that I could protect myself if someone would come to steal from me

I left the bad thoughts as I heard the birds singing, but I could not help sensing the sadness left in that place; It craved for life, for laughter and for love.

IMG_9024.jpegIMG_9026.jpegIMG_9027.jpeg

More and more buildings seemed empty and destroyed

IMG_9031.jpeg

And I decided to move on

IMG_9029.jpegIMG_9030.jpeg

I had noticed two more buildings on the left, with some cute art on them

IMG_9051.jpegIMG_9052.jpeg

IMG_9040.jpeg

I am sure that these buildings were for the little ones

IMG_9045.jpegIMG_9043.jpegIMG_9044.jpegIMG_9041.jpegIMG_9042.jpeg

Summer, love, children, laughter

The saddest part for me was when I went near the burnt house
It was a sleeping house and it looked as if so many children dreams were left to ruins..

IMG_9059.jpeg

IMG_9054.jpegIMG_9053.jpeg
IMG_9056.jpegIMG_9055.jpeg

But I needed to see hope.
I searched and read that this place closed during Covid. So not so long ago

IMG_9058.jpeg

But for the place to be operational again, about 1 million euro is required as per the first estimated. And it is not easy for this amount to be found.

IMG_9049.jpeg

So, until this is fixed again - if ever, maybe we can let the empty football courts to become one with nature.

Thank you for joining me at this virtual trip

It may never return to what it once was, but perhaps this space can still be reborn — not as ruins, but as a nature-friendly haven for all to enjoy. In harmony with nature, for everyone...

Judging from some small paintings. I can also imagine how the children were having fun there with full of joy. I also hope that the place gets maintenance again.Yes. But the cost is very high :)

Seeing abandoned places is heartbreaking especially when we think of its' glorious years. How nice if this can be restored especially that it's located by the beach. This place still has the potential as it is also surrounded with trees. The children have left their mark at this forgotten place.

visiting a place, the annoying thing is vandalism. I feel the same way as you

It is sad to see that the place that was once so beautiful, full of good memories such as love and laughter, is gone, ruined, abandoned, and the walls were even vandalized. I hope your government and even the community can talk about it, and hopefully, will think of a better way to preserve and raise funds to rebuild it. 🙂

I also hope that! There are too many to be done and no will, or no serious organization of procedures..
Thank you for dropping by!

This reminds me an amusement park that was here, pools, playgrounds, golf and such mainly for kids, then it failed and is now abandoned like this one, vandalized

I would avoid enter that places as you risk drug addicted people around

Thank you Davide, I thought about it the moment I saw the first vandalized building ... but my curiosity overpassed my fear.. Now that I think about it, I am not sure that I would go there alone again.
Have a lovely day and thanks for dropping by!

There's something to emotional about abandoned places like silent stories in the past. I can feel the memories left behind.

It’s heartbreaking to see a site once filled with laughter and light now left broken and forgotten. Hopefully one day, this place will find new life again.
