Pericles, The Golden Age of Athens and a Statue to Remind Us
I spent almost a week in Athens, a city that many would describe as the cradle of democracy, philosophy, and classical art. Whether you love or hate the modern version of it, it is definitely a city that played a central role in shaping Western civilization.
I do not visit Athens so often, and usually when I do, I do not have time to walk around as much as I want.
This time I will take you back in time, and by admiring this beautiful statue that was added to the street 21 years ago, in 2004 - we will remember a few things about Pericles - and why he is still remembered with admiration and respect.

Περικλής, ο Ξανθίππου, Χολαργεύς
Pericles, of Xanthipou (as his father was named) - from Cholargos (where he was born) - and where I stayed at.
Pericles is one of the few men that are tied in history so closely to ghe glory of ancient Athens - and to the years known as Athens Golden Age.
He was a general, and a visionary leader who played a crucial role in transforming Athens into a center of art, philosophy, and democracy during the 5th century.
Pericles and his leadership has left a lasting impact, having influenced political thought and cultural achievements for centuries.
Pericles was born around 495 BC, son to a noble family.
He was very well educated from great philosophers, including Anaxagoras. Soon, Pericles entered Athenian politics, and quickly rose. He was very eloquent, intelligent and democratic.
Pericles was a dominant figure in Athens, and wanted to ensure that everyone, even the poorest citizens had a voice in government decisions. During his time, everyone was allowed to participate in politics. Democracy, that is believed to be born in Athens-Greece, was more accessible than ever before.
Pericles ruled during the timeframe of approximately 461–429, and during that time, Athens flourished.
Some of his most significant achievements include:
- Construction of the Parthenon: Pericles initiated the building of the Parthenon, a magnificent temple dedicated to Athena, the city’s patron goddess.
Promotion of the Arts and Philosophy: Athens became the hub where many intellectuals of their time would meet, also Pericles encouraged the development of drama, sculpture, and historical writing.
Strengthening the Athenian Empire: Pericles secured Athens’ dominance over the Aegean Sea, boosting trade and wealth. (We should also mention that this eventually created some tensions with other city states as Sparta.)
This photo is a view from the place where the statue is. Behind is the Pericleus street, a beautiful road with lots of trees (and I also saw some cute cats there)
In front of us is Mesogeion Avenue, a large avenue where many big businesses and companies.

While Pericles is remembered and celebrated to this day, we should mention that there were some challenges he faced.
During his time, the Peloponnesian War begun and the citizens had to face a devastating plague, possibly due to some of his decisions. (concentration of population within the city walls - both his sons passed away due to the plague). He was also accused by some to over spend the citys treasures
Pericles’ vision and politics are still remembered, after he passed away (429 BC) Athens started to lose its glory - but his legacy has remained. His legacy shaped the culture, politics and the world remains inspired by him.
Pericles stands as a reminder of the transformative power of visionary leadership—of what a single individual can achieve when they dream boldly and act decisively. In the words of Pericles himself, “Time is the wisest counselor of all.”
Pericles Quotes
I asked Bing Chat to share some of the quotes of Pericles, and this is what it advised. Do any of these resonate with you?
Pericles left behind some inspiring and thought-provoking words. Here are a few notable quotes attributed to him:
"What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others." This reflects his belief in the lasting impact of one's actions and influence on people.
"Time is the wisest counselor of all." A timeless reminder of the value of patience and perspective.
"Freedom is the sure possession of those alone who have the courage to defend it." A powerful sentiment emphasizing the link between courage and liberty.
"Future generations will wonder at us, as the present age wonders at us now." Spoken during his famous funeral oration, this showcases his pride in Athens' achievements and his vision of its enduring legacy.
"We do not imitate, but are a model to others." Highlighting Athens' innovative spirit and leadership during its golden age.
Pericles' words capture the ideals of leadership, democracy, and cultural advancement that he championed.
Not widely known fact
According to Plutarch, although Pericles' appearance was "unimpeachable," his head was long and out of proportion. The comic poets of his day called him Schinocephalus or "squill head" (pen head). Because of Pericles' abnormally long head, he was often depicted wearing a helmet. (source: 4)
