A Welcome Blessing at the Onset of Chilai Kalan in kashmir
Photo taken last year,
Right at the stroke of midnight, when the hour hand of the clock struck 12, the 40-day-long severe cold period of this winter began. It is the harshest phase of the season. Temperatures drop sharply, and life becomes difficult. Activity comes to a near halt, barring a few essential sectors. All developmental works and outdoor activities that usually continue through other months are stopped, making this a period of forced idleness and inactivity.

Early in the morning, I heard droplets of water falling from a height and striking a metallic sheet on the ground, producing a rhythmic yet pleasing sound. When I looked outside, I was surprised to see light rain falling. It felt like a welcome arrival during this 40-day-long chilling period known as Chilai Kalan.

We had been eagerly awaiting precipitation, as the year had remained unusually dry, with very little rainfall during the summer. We hoped for some precipitation in the early part of winter as well, but those expectations were also disappointed. Winter, which effectively begins in November, had remained dry until now. This prolonged dryness had affected people in many ways—not only by increasing the incidence of flu and other illnesses, but also by reducing visibility across the valley, leading to its own set of problems.

With the onset of rain, visibility is expected to improve, and so is the general health of people. At the same time, precipitation brings its own challenges. Slippery roads make the movement of vehicles difficult and pose serious risks to pedestrians. Many people are seen suffering injuries or fractures during the winter due to such conditions. Still, winter reveals its true beauty only when there is precipitation; without it, the season becomes harsh and hazardous.

For us, the people of the valley who are closely connected with agriculture and horticulture, good winters with adequate precipitation are essential. Such precipitation helps sustain streams throughout the year and prevents excessive dryness in the atmosphere. Dry conditions can harm trees by drawing out their moisture, leading to reduced productivity and long-term decline. This rainfall, therefore, has brought renewed hope. Given that the year had been dry overall, a continuation of a dry winter would have worsened the situation. The precipitation that began this morning is thus being seen as a blessing from the Almighty, inspiring fresh hope and renewed vigour among the people for the year ahead.
