Pyramids in the sauerland / Pyramiden im Sauerland [ENG/DE]

Did you know that there are pyramids in the Sauerland in North Rhine-Westphalia? I did not know it until a few weeks ago. Actually, we landed there only by chance. We were in Winterberg and were given the Sauerland Summer Card by our accommodation. With this card you have discounted or even free admission to many leisure activities. On the list was the Galileo Park in Lennestadt. Since the weather was not very good that day, we decided to visit the Galileo Park.

Wusstet Ihr schon, dass es im Sauerland in Nordrhein Westfalen Pyramiden gibt? Ich wusste es bis vor ein paar Wochen auch nicht. Eigentlich sind wir auch nur durch Zufall dort gelandet. Wir waren in Winterberg und bekamen von unserer Unterkunft die Sauerland Sommer Karte ausgehändigt. Mit dieser Karte hat man vergünstigten oder sogar kostenlosen Eintritt bei vielen Freizeitaktivitäten. Mit auf der Liste war der Galileo Park in Lennestadt. Da das Wetter an diesem Tag nicht sehr gut war, beschlossen wir, den Galileo Park zu besuchen.

Arrived in Lennestadt we went up a small hill and suddenly we could discover the total of 7 Sauerland pyramids. In 4 of the pyramids are the exhibitions of the Galileo Park, which is called a puzzle and knowledge park. Knowledge as well as interest in new topics should be awakened there. We were curious to see what awaited us in the pyramids.
In the other 3 pyramids, by the way, various companies have settled and there are, among other things, offices in them.

Angekommen in Lennestadt ging es einen kleine Berg hinauf und plötzlich konnten wir die insgesamt 7 Sauerlandpyramiden entdecken. In 4 der Pyramiden befinden sich die Ausstellungen des Galileo Parks, welcher sich als Rätsel- und Wissenspark bezeichnet. Es sollen dort sowohl Wissen als auch das Interesse an neuen Themen geweckt werden. Wir waren schon gespannt, was uns in den Pyramiden wohl erwartet.
In den anderen 3 Pyramiden haben sich übrigens diverse Unternehmen angesiedelt und es befinden sich unter anderem Büroräume in Ihnen.

Galileo Park:

The area around the pyramids is laid out like a small park with a lake and small bridges. There are also some works of art to admire in the outdoor area.

Das Gelände rund um die Pyramiden ist wie ein kleiner Park mit einem See und kleinen Brücken angelegt. Außerdem gibt es einige Kunstwerke auf dem Außengelände zu bewundern.

This bizarre metal structure is called "Ritual Mashine" and was created by Greek-Polish artist Pawel Thanasis Lickas. He was apparently inspired by science fiction movies.

Dieses skurrile Metallgebilde nennt sich "Ritual Mashine" und wurde von dem griechisch-polnischen Künstler Pawel Thanasis Lickas erschaffen. Inspiriert wurde er anscheinend durch Science Fiction Filme.

1. Exhibition: Dead as a Dodo / 1. Ausstellung: Tot wie ein Dodo:

And now it went for us to the 1st pyramid. The current exhibition is called "Death like a Dodo. Species. Dying. Yesterday. Today." It is about extinction and species extinction, which has been and is still being caused indirectly or directly by humans.
In the exhibition there are several life-size dioramas to admire, which illustrate the extinction of species in different eras.

Und nun ging es für uns in die 1. Pyramide. Die aktuelle Ausstellung trägt den Namen "Tod wie ein Dodo. Arten. Sterben. Gestern. Heute." Es geht dabei um die Ausrottung und das Artensterben, welches indirekt oder direkt durch den Menschen verursacht wurde und immer noch wird.
In der Ausstellung gibt es einige lebensgroße Dioramen zu bestaunen, die das Artensterben in verschiedenen Zeitepochen veranschaulichen.

The Dodo / Der Dodo:

The exhibition's namesake is considered a prime example of a species wiped out by humans. The pigeon-like and flightless dodos inhabited Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. The dodos were trusting, having no natural predators. When in the 16th and 17th centuries many seafarers headed for the island to stock up on supplies, the dodos became easy prey for them. After rats, monkeys and pigs were also introduced to the island, this led to the extinction of the dodos, as their eggs were eaten by the immigrants. Around 1700, the dodos are said to be completely extinct.

Der Namensgeber der Ausstellung gilt als Paradebeispiel für eine von Menschen ausgerottete Art. Die taubenähnlichen und flugunfähigen Dodos besiedelten Mauritius im Indischen Ozean. Die Dodos waren zutraulich, da sie keine natürlichen Fressfeinde hatten. Als im 16. und 17. Jahrhundert viele Seefahrer die Insel ansteuerten, um sich dort mit Vorräten einzudecken, wurden die Dodos für sie zu einer leichten Beute. Nachdem dann auch noch Ratten, Affen und Schweine auf die Insel eingeschleppt wurden, führte dies zur Ausrottung der Dodos, da ihre Eier von den Einwanderern aufgefressen wurden. Um 1700 herum sollen die Dodos somit gänzlich ausgestorben sein.

The Giant Auk / Der Riesenalk:

The flightless giant auk (pinguinus impennis), unlike today's penguins, lived in the northern hemisphere along the islands of the North Atlantic and spent only 2 months on land during its breeding season. When the first settlers reached the islands, the flightless and not shy animals were a "found food" and quickly became an integral part of the menu. The sailors also liked the easy prey and at the beginning of the 19th century there were only a few specimens left. In the meantime, the great auk has become extinct.

Der flugunfähige Riesenalk (pinguinus impennis) lebte anders als heutige Pinguine auf der Nordhalbkugel entlang der Inselns des Nordatlantiks und verbrachte nur 2 Monate während seiner Brutzeit an Land. Als nun die ersten Siedler die Inseln erreichten, waren die flugunfähigen und nicht scheuen Tiere ein "gefundenes Fressen" und schnell fester Bestandteil der Speisekarte. Auch die Seeleute fanden Gefallen an der leichten Beute und zu Beginn des 19 Jahrhunderts gab es nur noch ein paar wenige Exemplare. Mittlerweile ist der Riesenalk ausgestorben.

The fate of rhinos is familiar to many of us. Because of their horns, which are among the most expensive illegal wildlife products, they are hunted by poachers and their population is steadily declining.

Das Schicksal der Nashörner ist vielen von uns bekannt. Aufgrund ihrer Hörner, die zu den teuersten illegalen Wildtierprodukten zählen, werden sie von Wilderern gejagt und ihre Population sinkt stetig.

Since from many animals so-called "remedies" are won by this lucrative business many animal species are threatened by extinction.

Da aus vielen Tieren sogenannte "Heilmittel" gewonnen werden sind durch dieses lukrative Geschäft viele Tierarten vom Aussterben bedroht.

Animalische Wanderung: Migration im Tierreich:

In dieserder nächsten Ausstellung geht es die Einschleppung von tieren und Pflanzen in andere Ökosysteme und welche Bedrohung diese Migration für die biologische Vielfalt darstellen kann. An vielen Schaubildern und Mitmachstationen konnte man einiges lernen, z.B. die Unterscheidung von invasiven und nichinvasiven Arten. In dieser Ausstellung konnte ich keine Fotos machen, da dort viele Mitmachstationen für Kinder aufgebaut waren.
Interessant fand ich jedoch die Unterscheidung von Invasiven und nicht Invasiven Arten, die ich Euch kurz aufzeigen möchte:

Invasive species:
Invasive species endanger our flora and fauna and thus the biodiversity of native ecosystems through their spread. For example, they drive out food competitors or transmit diseases for which no protection has yet been established. Although only about 1% of the introduced species can be classified as invasive, they cause major problems in Europe because they threaten the local biodiversity.

Invasive Arten:
Invasive Arten gefährden durch Ihre Ausbreitung unsere Flora und Fauna und somit die biologische Vielfalt der heimischen Ökosysteme. So vertreiben sie z.B. Nahrungskonkurrenten oder übertragen Krankheiten, für die noch kein Schutz aufgebaut wurde. Obwohl nur ca. 1% der eingewanderten Arten als invasiv eingestuft werden können, führen diese in Europa zu großen Problemen, da sie die hiesige Artenvielfalt bedrohen.

Non-invasive species:
Immigrated species that do not cause ecological or economic damage are called non-invasive. By not competing with other species, they can fill ecological niches and in turn contribute to biodiversity.

Nichtinvasive Arten:
Eingewanderte Arten, die keinen ökologischen oder ökonomischen Schaden anrichten, nennt man nichtinvasiv. Indem diese nicht in Konkurrenz zu anderen Arten stehen, können diese ökologische Nischen füllen und wiederum zur Artenvielfalt beitragen.

Alone in the universe / Allein im Universum

The exhibition “Alone in the Universe” is currently located in the largest pyramid, which had to be climbed via stairs. This exhibition was our highlight of the park. It really felt like you were walking through a pyramid because it was so elaborately and imaginatively designed. I have always found the theme of the exhibition and mysterious phenomena in general interesting and our son was also enthusiastic about it. In Indiana Jones style, the entrance door could be opened by pressing a stone tile, which of course makes children's eyes light up ;)

In der größten Pyramide, welche man über Treppen erklimmen musste, befindet sich zurzeit die Ausstellung "Allein im Universum". Diese Ausstellung war unser Highlight des Parks. Man hatte wirklich ein wenig das Gefühl, durch eine Pyramide zu gehen, da sie so aufwendig und phantasievoll gestaltet wurde. Auch das Thema der Ausstellung und rätselhafte Phänomene im Allgemeinen fand ich immer schon interessant und auch unser Sohn konnte sich dafür begeistern. In Indiana Jones Manier ließ sich die Eingangstür durch einen Druck auf eine Steinkachel öffnen, was Kinderaugen natürlich leuchten lässt ;)

The Maya / Die Maya

In one of the small rooms, the Mayan civilization was discussed, whose highly developed calendar, mathematics and crafts still pose a mystery today as to where they got all their knowledge from.
In the following picture, for example, you can see a stone figure from an ancient Mayan site, "which is compared to the representation of a modern fighter pilot with a helmet and breathing mask."
There are people who believe that the Maya were once visited by extraterrestrials and that this is how they acquired their great knowledge.

In einem der kleinen Räume wurde die Zivilisation der Maya thematisiert, deren hochentwickelte Kalender, Mathematik und Kunsthandwerk auch heute noch Rätsel aufgibt, woher sie all Ihr Wissen hatten.
Auf dem folgenden Bild sieht man zum Beispiel eine Steinfigur aus einer antiken Majastätte, "die mit der Darstellung eines modernen Kampfpiloten mit Helm und Atemmaske verglichen wird".
So gibt es Menschen, die glauben, dass die Maya einst Besuch von außerirdischen hatten, und so an ihr großes Wissen gelangt sind.

Existence of aliens? / Existenz von Aliens?

A large part of the exhibition deals with alleged sightings of UFOs and the question of the existence of extraterrestrial life. I think everyone has wondered if there is other life out there, right?

Ein Großteil der Ausstellung befasst sich mit vermeintlichen Sichtungen von Ufos und er Frage nach der Existens von extraterrestrischem Leben. Ich denke jeder hat sich schon einmal gefragt, ob es da draußen noch anderes Leben gibt, oder?

Here is the entrance to a replica space station / Hier der Eingang zu einer nachgebauten Raumstation:

In the next room there was a replica of a space station where the children could take the controls and feel like they were operating a space shuttle. You could also record your voice on a device and translate it into an “extraterrestrial” language.

Im nächsten Raum war der Nachbau einer Raumstation, in der sich die Kinder an das Steuer setzen konnten und das Gefühl hatten, eine Räumfähre zu bedienen. Auch konnte man an einem Gerät seine Stimme aufnehmen und in eine "außerirdische" Sprache übersetzen.

Diese "Außerirdischen" düfte wohl jeder von uns kennen ;)

The absolute highlight for our son was these VR glasses. You could use it to assemble a virtual robot, which absolutely fascinated her. It was hard to get him to move on after a while.

Das absolute Highlight für unseren Sohn war diese VR Brille. Mit Ihr konnte man einen virtuellen Roboter zusammenbauen, was ih absolut fasziniert hat. Es war schwer, ihn nach einiger Zeit zum weitergehen zu bewegen.

From the large pyramid you had a beautiful view of the surrounding area and in particular the neighboring Meggener mine, which now houses a museum because ore mining there was stopped in 1992 due to the exhaustion of supplies.

Von dem Hügel vor den Pyramiden hatte man einen schönen Ausblick über die Umgebung und insbesondere das benachbarte Bergwerg Meggener, in dem heutzutage ein Museum untergebracht ist, denn seit 1992 wurde die Erzförderung dort aufgrund der Erschöpfung der Vorräte eingestellt.

Fazit:

We really liked the Galileo Park in the Sauerland Pyramids. The exhibitions were interesting, educational and thought-provoking. Our ecosystem is simply too precious to continue destroying. I hope that the next generations will learn more from the mistakes of their ancestors and treat their environment better. But as long as wealthy people, for example, are willing to pay a lot of money for exotic animal goods, there will continue to be profiteers who will continue to exploit the animal kingdom.

Uns hat der Galileo Park in den Sauerland Pyramiden sehr gut gefallen. Die Austellungen waren interessant, lehrreich und haben zum Nachdenken angeregt. Unser Ökosystem ist einfach zu kostbar, um es weiter zu zerstören. Ich hoffe, dass die nächsten Generationen mehr aus den Fehlern Ihrer Vorfahren lernen und besser mit Ihrer Umwelt umgehen werden. Doch solange z.B. wohlhabende Menschen bereit sind, viel Geld für exotische Tier Waren zu zahlen, wird es auch weiterhin Profiteure geben, die das Tierreich weiterhin ausschlachten werden.

Ich hoffe, Euch hat mein kleiner Einblick in die Sauerland Pyramiden gefallen und vielleicht auch etwas zum Nachdenken angeregt ;)
