Hello, community. Last August 5th I visited for the fourth time the Botanical Garden of Naguanagua and spent about an hour taking black and white photos. I hope you like them.

Hola, comunidad. El pasado cinco de agosto visité por cuarta vez el Jardín Botánico de Naguanagua y pasé alrededor de una hora tomando fotos en blanco y negro. Espero sean de su agrado.

The feeling of being in a world isolated from the city accompanies me whenever I visit this place. At the same time, nostalgia invades me, because I feel like I am in Barrera (the town/neighborhood where I grew up) thanks to the dense vegetation that surrounds me, the humidity I breathe and the incessant sounds of insects and birds.

La sensación de estar en un mundo aíslado de la ciudad me acompaña siempre que visito este lugar. Al mismo tiempo, me invade la nostalgia, pues siento que estoy en Barrera (el pueblo/barrio donde crecí) gracias a la vegetación densa que me rodea, la humedad que se respira y los sonidos incesantes de insectos y pájaros.

For this reason I recorded a black and white video where I tried to capture the sound and the vegetation around me. Although it seems my phone only picked up the sound of the wind.

Por esta razón grabé un vídeo en blanco y negro donde intenté capturar el sonido y la vegetación que me rodeaba. Aunque parece que mi teléfono solo captó el sonido del viento.

The botanical garden of Naguanagua has a wide variety of plants and trees. Each one of them has a plaque with the scientific and common name, as well as a description of the birds that feed on their fruits and other characteristics of the tree or plant; but most of these plaques are worn and the names are illegible.

El jardín botánico de Naguanagua cuenta con una variedad muy amplia de plantas y árboles. Cada uno de ellos tiene una placa con el nombre científico y el común, además de una descripción sobre las aves que se alimentan de sus frutos y otras características del árbol o planta; pero la mayoría de estas placas están desgastadas y los nombres son ilegibles.

So I took pictures without knowing which tree was this one or that one; although I recognized the Camoruco, the Indio Desnudo and some ornamental plants that I have seen in the houses of family and friends.

Así que tomé fotos sin saber qué árbol era este o aquel; aunque reconocí el Camoruco, el Indio Desnudo y algunas plantas ornamentales que he visto en casas de familiares y amigos.

One of the things that caught my attention during the tour was a muddy space that was full of trees of various sizes and types, similar to a miniature jungle.

Una de las cosas que me llamó la atención durante el recorrido fue un espacio fanganoso que estaba repleto de árboles de diversos tamaños y tipos, parecido a una selva en miniatura.

The arboretum is a space where a collection of trees and shrubs is exhibited. Most of the trees in our arboretum are deciduous or deciduous, meaning that they lose their leaves during the dry season.

In this attractive passageway you will appreciate a diversity of fungi, herbs, bushes and trees such as Bucare, Ceiba and Jabillo that offer food and shelter to parrots and macaws.

I spent several minutes contemplating the trees, eager to go into the jungle, even though I didn't have the right clothes or shoes.

Pasé varios minutos contemplando los árboles, con ganas de adentrarme en la selva, aunque no tenía la ropa o los zapatos adecuados.

Then I continued walking through the garden, amazed by the wonders of nature and harassed by mosquitoes.

Luego seguí caminando por el jardín, asombrado por las maravillas de la naturaleza y acosado por los mosquitos.

I was impressed by the parasitic plant that covers this tree. It is an oppressive image from my point of view. I don't know what you think of it.

Me impresionó la planta párasita que recubre este árbol. Es una imagen opresiva desde mi punto de vista. No sé qué les parezca a ustedes.

Then I took a detour on a road that had no way out. Although I only found this out at the end, when several plants blocked my path and I had to turn back.

Después me desvié por un camino que no tenía salida. Aunque esto lo supe al final, cuando varias plantas me obstruyeron el paso y tuve que regresar.

Below I share with you a video that I recorded before entering the road. In the video is the first thing I focus on, because I had a long time without walking there and the last time I did it was hard to get out. The road to the left, which I focus on at the end of the video, is where I should have returned, but I did not.

A continuación les comparto un vídeo que grabé antes de entrar al camino. En el vídeo es lo primero que enfoco, pues tenía tiempo sin caminar por allí y la última vez que lo hice me costó salir. El camino que hay a la izquierda y enfoco al final del vídeo, es por donde tendría que haber regresado; pero no fue así.

I took several pictures when I was there. It looked like a forgotten road. Sunlight could barely filter through the trees and a roof of branches and leaves prevented me from seeing the sky clearly.

Tomé varias fotos cuando estuve allí. Parecía un camino olvidado. La luz del sol apenas podía filtrarse a través de los árboles y un techo de ramas y hojas impedía ver el cielo claramente.

Last but not least, I took pictures of the historic Saman tree in the garden. The first time I visited this place, I fell in love with this tree. According to the plaque, which I could not see on this visit, this tree is more than four hundred years old. Impressive.

Por último, pero no menos importante, tomé fotos del Samán histórico que hay en el jardín. La primera vez que visité este lugar, quedé enamorado de este árbol. Según la placa, que en esta visita no pude visualizar, este árbol tiene más de cuatroscientos años. Impresionante.

It is so huge that it looks like the God of the garden (to quote the Japanese and their gods). Its trunk is thick and it takes four or five people to wrap their arms around it, although I have not yet confirmed this.

Es tan inmenso que parece el Dios del jardín (por citar a los japoneses y sus dioses). Su tronco es grueso y se necesitan entre cuatro o cinco personas para rodearlo con los brazos abiertos; aunque todavía no lo he confirmado.

Every time I come here I think that this tree has seen a great part of the history of Venezuela and it never ceases to seem incredible to me.

Cada vez que vengo pienso que este árbol ha visto gran parte de la historia de Venezuela y nunca deja de parecerme increíble.

A few meters from the Samán, there is a sort of shrine with a dome. Inside is the image of a virgin called Maria Auxiliadora, the patron saint of the Botanical Garden of Naguanagua.

A pocos metros del Samán, hay una especie de santuario con una cúpula. Adentro está la imagen de una virgen llamada Maria Auxiliadora, la patrona del Jardín Botánico de Naguanagua.

This image was donated and blessed by Father Guerrino Friso, who was the director of the Salesian Agronomic School, on whose grounds this botanical garden was founded on June 16, 1999.

Undoubtedly, this place has its own magic. Although it was founded twenty-two years ago, walking its paths in the company of trees, plants, insects, birds, butterflies and occasionally the bugles of city cars, makes you feel that you are in a world apart where nature claims its space.

Sin duda, este lugar tiene su propia magia. A pesar de que se fundó hace veintidos años, recorrer sus caminos en compañía de árboles, plantas, insectos, aves, mariposas y, ocasionalmente, los cornetazos de los carros de la ciudad, te hace sentir que estás en un mundo aparte donde la naturaleza reclama su espacio.

This publication is not intended to be a guide to the Botanical Garden of Naguanagua. It lacks much information about the space, its trees, its caretakers and some details.
