[ENG-SPN] Winter, Templars, and Ghosts: The Frozen Legends of Castillejo de Robledo / Invierno, templarios y fantasmas: las leyendas heladas de Castillejo de Robledo

Winter, with its extreme temperatures, heavy snowfalls, and frigid dawns, is also a time for reflection, for appreciating home life, and for recalling, by the cozy fireside, those old stories and legends that, for centuries, have fueled the imaginations of countless generations, opening a door to fantasy and freeing the ghosts of the supernatural from their oblivion.

They say—and I can assure you from experience that it's absolutely true—that Castillejo de Robledo—one of the places disputed as the site of the famous Affront at Corpres, where El Cid's daughters, Doña Sol and Doña Blanca, were savagely violated by their husbands, the Counts of Carrión—is not only the coldest village in Spain, but also another of those places where the Knights Templar were protagonists of lurid tales that left a deep mark on the popular imagination, becoming part of its most deeply rooted legends.

Among them, the most notable is the legend of Vallejo Caballero, which tells of a wayward knight who, driven by the fury of Eros, not only violated his vows and oaths but also murdered his Master. For this, he was condemned to wander, like a cursed spirit, through the intricate paths surrounding this mountain village shared by Soria and Segovia, frightening unsuspecting travelers in a manner similar to the legend of Sleepy Hollow across the ocean. In this case, however, no heads rolled, but if we are to believe popular tradition, there were plenty of scares that could have caused heart attacks.

El invierno, con sus temperaturas extremas, sus fuertes nevadas y sus gélidas madrugadas, es también un tiempo de recogimiento, de apreciar la vida hogareña y de volver a recordar, junto al agradable fuego del hogar esas viejas historias y leyendas, que, durante siglos, fueron acompañando la imaginación de incontables generaciones, abriendo una puerta a la fantasía, liberando de su ostracismo a los fantasmas de lo sobrenatural.

Dicen y ya les aseguro yo, por experiencia, que es totalmente cierto, que Castillejo de Robledo -uno de los lugares que se disputa el famoso episodio de la Afrenta de Corpres, donde las hijas del Cid, doña Sol y doña Blanca, fueron salvajemente ultrajadas por sus esposos, los condes de Carrión- es el pueblo, no sólo más frío de España, sino también, otro de esos lugares donde los caballeros templarios fueron protagonistas de escabrosas historias, que dejaron una profunda huella en el imaginativo popular, formando parte de sus más arraigadas leyendas.

Destaca entre ellas, aquella, que, conocida como la leyenda del Vallejo Caballero, habla de un caballero díscolo, que dejándose llevar por el furor de Eros, no sólo cometió una afrenta a sus hábitos y juramentos, sino, que, además, asesinó a su Maestre y por ello fue condenado a vagar, como un espíritu maldito, por entre los intrincados caminos del entorno de este pueblo de las serranías que comparten Soria y Segovia, espantando a los confiados viajeros, de una forma similar a aquella otra, que, más allá del océano, dio origen a la famosa leyenda de Sleepy Hollow, aunque, en este caso, no rodaban cabezas, pero sí, si hemos de hacer caso de las tradiciones populares, sustos con categorías de infartos.
