[ENG-SPN] The Wandering Altarpiece / El Retablo Errante

Sometimes, the historical and artistic heritage of our towns is like Kafka's famous doll: it disappears under strange circumstances, becomes embroiled in unexpected adventures, and sometimes returns home, deepening the mystery of its absence.

Far from being numerous, unfortunately, these examples, though few, have the power to fascinate and, at the same time, the capacity to stir enough emotion to make those neighbors who were once outraged by its absence—to put it delicately—turn around like the characters in Lope de Vega's famous play, 'Fuenteovejuna'. That is to say, all together, raising their voices so that what has returned stops wandering in the hands of speculators and stays permanently in the place to which it belongs.

Such was the case, for example, of the Gothic altarpiece from the Collegiate Church of San Pedro de Cervatos, which some years ago was taken to a village in Valladolid for restoration and was never heard from again, until a couple of years ago when two of its most striking pieces reappeared. These pieces, displayed next to the arched niches of the apse, united some local residents, determined not to let them leave again: the Adoration of the Magi and the Virgin with Saint Anne.

En ocasiones, el patrimonio histórico-artístico de nuestros pueblos es como la famosa muñeca de Kafka: desaparece en extrañas circunstancias, se ve envuelto en insospechadas aventuras y algunas veces retorna a casa, incrementando el misterio de su ausencia.

Lejos, por desgracia, de ser cuantiosos, los ejemplos, aunque escasos, tienen la facultad de fascinar y a la vez, la capacidad de levantar la suficiente carga emotiva, como para hacer que aquellos vecinos que un día se indignaron por su ausencia -por decirlo de una manera fina- se vuelvan como en la famosa obra de Lope de Vega, que lleva por título ‘Fuenteovejuna’. Es decir, todos a una, elevando la voz para que aquello que ha retornado deje de vagabundear en manos de especuladores y se quede definitivamente en el lugar al que pertenece.

Sería el caso, por ejemplo, del retablo gótico de la Colegiata de San Pedro de Cervatos, que hace algunos años se llevó a restaurar a cierto pueblo de Valladolid y del que nunca más se supo, hasta que hace un par de años, aparecieron dos de sus piezas más llamativas, que, en aquellos momentos, expuestas junto a los arcosolios del ábside, unieron a unos vecinos, dispuestos a no dejarlas volver a marchar: la Adoración de los Magos y la Virgen con Santa Ana.
