[ENG-SPN] The Virgin Who Came from the Sea / La Virgen que llegó del mar

It is said that it was precisely at one of the most dangerous points of entry to the port of San Vicente where the small boat ran aground. Without oars or crew to steer it, the boat carried a sublime image of the Virgin, who from then on became the undisputed Patron Saint of the place: the Virgin of La Barquera. When did this miracle occur? It is not known exactly. Some sources place it during the time of the Muslim conquest, while others place it centuries later. Regardless of this detail, what is truly important about this tradition is its connection to the very Inventio that also gave rise to the supposed arrival of the Apostle James on the Galician coast. Furthermore, the tradition adheres to another of the rules associated with numerous Romanesque Virgins: their express wish not to be moved and to remain forever in the chosen place.

For many years, it was said that the original small boat on which the miracle took place hung inside the ancient sanctuary dedicated to it. This sanctuary, curiously, is known to have witnessed two coronations: the first, on September 8, 1929, when the sanctuary likely still housed the original image, which mysteriously disappeared a few years later—perhaps hidden or lost forever in 1936 during the terrible events of the Spanish Civil War—and was replaced by a replica that possibly bears no resemblance to the original. The second coronation took place in 1929 and again in 1950.

In fact, one of the most popular and culturally significant festivals, the Folía, takes the current image from its sanctuary every year, parades it through the town, and then places it on a boat in a maritime procession, where it is accompanied by the other fishing vessels of this beautiful Cantabrian town. In this regard, it is said that, having two such charismatic Virgins, one reigns over the heights—Santa María de los Ángeles—and the other, the Virgen de la Barquera, reigns over the limits of the sea and the land. There are even dreamers, undoubtedly influenced by the magic of the spectacular sunsets, who claim that, on occasion, the very sun that inexorably sets over Finisterre plays with its fading rays and seems to trace a curious female figure walking on the waves, toward a sanctuary, perhaps not particularly beautiful in appearance, but one that holds a treasure within.

Se afirma que es, precisamente en uno de los puntos más peligrosos de entrada al puerto de San Vicente, donde quedó varada la pequeña barca, que, sin remos ni marinería que la gobernara, transportaba una sublime imagen de una Virgen, que a partir de entonces se convirtió en la Patrona indiscutibles del lugar: la Virgen de la Barquera. ¿Cuándo fue tal prodigio? No se sabe exactamente. Algunas fuentes lo sitúan en el tiempo de la conquista musulmana, mientras que otras, optan por situarlo siglos después. Independientemente de este detalle, lo verdaderamente importante de esta tradición, es su complicidad con la propia Inventio que dio también origen a la supuesta llegada del Apóstol Santiago a las costas de Galicia. Pero, además, la tradición cumple con otra de las reglas asociadas a numerosas vírgenes románicas: su deseo expreso de no ser trasladada y permanecer para siempre en el lugar elegido.

Durante muchos años, se cuenta que la pequeña barca original sobre la que se realizó el milagro estuvo colgada en el interior del vetusto santuario que se le dedicó. Un santuario, en cuyo interior, curiosamente, se sabe que hubo dos coronaciones: en la primera, acaecida el 8 de septiembre de 1929, seguramente el santuario todavía contaba con la imagen original, misteriosamente desaparecida unos años después -pudiera ser que ocultara o se perdiera definitivamente en 1936, durante los terribles episodios de la Guerra Civil- siendo sustituida por una réplica que posiblemente ni se asemeje a la original y la segunda coronación: una, se realizó en el año 1929 y la otra en 1950.

De hecho, una de las fiestas más populares y de evidente carácter cultural, la Folía, saca todos los años de su santuario a la imagen actual, la pasea por la villa y posteriormente la embarca en una procesión marítima, donde se ve acompañada por el resto de las embarcaciones marineras de esta preciosa villa cántabra. A tal respecto, se dice, que, teniendo dos Vírgenes tan carismáticas, una reina sobre las alturas -Santa María de los Ángeles- y la otra, la Virgen de la Barquera, lo hace sobre los límites del mar y de la tierra. Incluso hay soñadores, sin duda influenciados por la magia de los espectaculares atardeceres, que afirman, que, en ocasiones, ese mismo sol que se dirige inexorablemente a ocultarse en el Finisterre, juega con sus mortecinos rayos y parece dibujar una curiosa figura femenina caminando sobre las olas, en dirección a un santuario, de aspecto quizás no muy hermoso, pero que guarda un tesoro en su interior.
