[ENG-SPN] The Sphinx of Priesca / La Esfinge de Priesca

At first glance, one is already struck by the dizzying sensation of peering into the unfathomable abyss of that curse we call Time. Centuries upon centuries of a mother history and alternative histories, written by thousands upon thousands of pilgrims, revolve around this timeless example of mastery and resilience.

We are in the outskirts of Villaviciosa, in a small inland town called Priesca, where the mysterious echoes of the Cantabrian Sea also reach, and before us stands this marvelous Sphinx of Asturian pre-Romanesque art: the Church of San Salvador.

Included among the must-see routes of the Primitive Way to Santiago de Compostela, this church is one of the main temples dedicated to the figure of the Savior—the most important, of course, being Oviedo Cathedral itself—and formed an alternative pilgrimage route. It was consecrated in September of 921, during the reign of Fruela II.

Con sólo echarla un primer vistazo, ya se tiene la vertiginosa sensación de estar asomándose a los abismos insondables de esa maldición que llamamos Tiempo. Siglos y siglos de una Historia madre y unas historias alternativas y escritas por miles y miles de peregrinos, girando alrededor de este consuetudinario ejemplo de maestría y resiliencia.

Estamos en los alrededores de Villaviciosa, en una pequeña localidad del interior, llamada Priesca, a donde también llegan los ecos misteriosos del mar Cantábrico y frente a nosotros tenemos esta maravillosa Esfinge del arte prerrománico asturiano, que es la iglesia de San Salvador.

Incluida dentro de los imperdibles senderos del Camino Primitivo a Santiago de Compostela, además de ser uno de los principales templos dedicados a la figura del Salvador -el más importante, obviamente, sería la propia catedral de Oviedo- que conformaban, además, una ruta de peregrinación alternativa y que fue consagrada, nada más y nada menos que en septiembre del año 921, durante el reinado de Fruela II.
