[ENG-SPN] The Secret of the Angels / El secreto de los Ángeles

Some apocryphal secret statutes, supposedly attributed to a mysterious Templar master named Roncellín, stipulated that the brothers of the Order had to place the corresponding identifying marks on all their buildings. It is also known that Benedictines, Cistercians, and Templars all played a significant role, being, to a large extent, the true architects of the great architectural landmarks that mark the Camino de Santiago, since they were also the main beneficiaries of the privileges granted by the Spanish kings.

This does not mean, however, that the immense number of signs, symbols, and signals found, strategically placed in both prominent and hidden locations within the various buildings that guide the pilgrim's yearning to participate in an adventure beyond the spiritual—namely, the pursuit of Knowledge—have a purely Templar origin. But in many cases, one can indeed turn to the popular saying that where there's smoke, there's fire.

One of the most legendary places in San Vicente de la Barquera is found on the ascending path that pilgrims had to travel, leaving the castle behind, until reaching the heights where the Romanesque-Gothic church stands, dedicated to a figure whose name carries a supernatural connotation: Our Lady of the Angels. Besides the veneration inside of a beautiful Gothic image representing her as 'Galactotrofusa' or 'Virgin of the Milk,' associated with 'spiritual nourishment' or 'Knowledge'—aside from the Christ Child, one of the most famous recipients of this 'spiritual nourishment' was Saint Bernard himself, the patron saint of the Knights Templar—the church displays all kinds of symbolism, which, while not necessarily Templar, nonetheless provides a good guide for those interested in mystery and hidden knowledge.

Unos apócrifos estatutos secretos, atribuidos, supuestamente, a un misterioso maestro templario de nombre Roncellín, establecían que los hermanos de la Orden debían de poner, en todos sus edificios, los correspondientes signos de identificación. Se sabe, además, que tanto benedictinos, como cistercienses y templarios tuvieron un notable protagonismo, siendo, en gran medida, los verdaderos artífices de los grandes hitos arquitectónicos que jalonan el Camino de Santiago, ya que también fueron los principales beneficiarios de las prebendas de los reyes españoles.

No significa, por otra parte, que la inmensa cantidad de signos, símbolos y señales que se localizan, oportunamente situados en lugares, tanto destacados como secretos, de los diferentes edificios que dirigen el ansia del peregrino por ser partícipe de otra aventura, aparte de la espiritual, como es la del Conocimiento, tengan un origen netamente templario. Pero, en muchos casos, sí que se puede recurrir a aquel dicho popular que afirma que cuando el río suena, la corriente lleva también visos de histórica veracidad.

Uno de los lugares más legendarios de San Vicente de la Barquera, lo tenemos en ese camino en ascenso que los peregrinos tenían que recorrer, dejando atrás el castillo, hasta alcanzar esas alturas donde se levanta la iglesia románico-gótica de una personalidad, cuya advocación abraza una sugerencia sobrenatural: Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles. Además de venerarse en su interior una preciosa imagen gótica que la representa como ‘Galactotrofusa’ o ‘Virgen de la Leche’, relacionada con el ‘alimento espiritual’ o ‘el Conocimiento’ -aparte del Niño, uno de los más famosos beneficiarios de este ‘alimento espiritual’ fue el propio San Bernardo, padrino del Temple- la iglesia muestra todo tipo de simbología, que, aunque no sea necesariamente templaria, sí implica, no obstante, una buena guía para los seguidores del misterio y el conocimiento oculto.
