Eugene Canseliet commented, in the prologue of the first edition of an immortal work, entitled 'The Mystery of the Cathedrals', that Fulcanelli, its mysterious author, has not been among us for a long time. This happened almost a hundred years ago, in 1925, and both Fulcanelli and the medieval cathedrals not only continue to be a fascinating enigma, but also their 'magic' persists, in that, like enigmatic sphinxes, they insist on placing It tests the observer's insight, while challenging his imagination.

It was not in vain that Goethe - recreator, among other wonderful works, of the story of Dr. Faust, a character who, like the mythical Apollonius of Tyana, navigates the uncertain frontiers of reality and legend - set the tone when he stated that the builders of cathedrals sought God in the highest places. And it is, precisely, when you enter a Gothic cathedral, at the heights where you have to look, to sense, when you appreciate those vaults, wonderfully displayed in the shape of sails, that you find yourself in a metaphorical ship - similar to the nave that it must not return, by Machado, to the solar ships of the pharaohs or even to that other ship, elven and wonderful that Tolkien put at Bilbo's disposal to make his last journey towards the West - capable of transporting the Spirit to unimaginable horizons , on a prodigious journey through the uncertain seas of the Unknowable.

Comentaba Eugene Canseliet, en el prólogo de la primera edición de una obra inmortal, que lleva por título ‘El misterio de las catedrales’, que hace mucho tiempo que Fulcanelli, su misterioso autor, no está ya entre nosotros. Esto acaecía hace casi cien años, en 1925, y tanto Fulcanelli, como las catedrales medievales, no sólo continúan siendo un fascinante enigma, sino que, además, su ‘magia’ persiste, en cuanto, que, cual enigmáticas esfinges insisten en poner a prueba la perspicacia del observador, desafiando, a la vez, su imaginación.

No en vano sentó cátedra Goethe -recreador, entre otras maravillosas obras, de la historia del doctor Fausto, personaje, que, al igual que el mítico Apolonio de Tiana, navega en las inciertas fronteras de la realidad y de la leyenda- cuando afirmó que los constructores de catedrales buscaban a Dios en las alturas. Y es, precisamente, cuando se entra en una catedral gótica, a las alturas donde hay que mirar, para presentir, cuando se aprecian esas bóvedas, maravillosamente desplegadas en forma de velas, que uno se encuentra en un metafórico navío -semejante a la nave que no ha de tornar, de Machado, a los barcos solares de los faraones o incluso a aquélla otra nave, élfica y maravillosa que Tolkien puso a disposición de Bilbo para realizar su última travesía hacia el Oeste- capaz de transportar al Espíritu hacia horizontes inimaginables, en una prodigiosa travesía a través de los inciertos mares de lo Incognoscible.
