[ENG-SPN] The Romanesque That Withstood the Riders of Time / El Románico que Resistió a los Jinetes del Tiempo

Nor could the church of Castillejo de Mesleón survive unscathed the passage of that Baroque steamroller, among other Horsemen of the Apocalypse, which left its mark, like that four-legged beast upon which Attila the Hun rode, instilling terror in his enemies and leaving an indelible footprint on the grass he had the misfortune to pass over.

Also dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption, like the church of Sequera de Fresno, the solitude of this consecrated stone geometry, presumably dating from the same period in which Eleanor of Aquitaine was promoting troubadour culture in her famous Courts of Love, is only disturbed by the incessant traffic of the A-6 motorway and occasionally by those who turn off a few kilometers before, heading towards Sepúlveda and the stunning natural landscape of the Duratón River Gorge.

However, enough of its original architecture remains for the curious traveler—who, like the witches in Galicia, fortunately still exist—to postpone their appointment with destiny for a few minutes and admire, without reservation, a temple that, after all, even without excessive ornamentation, is still characterized by that fortunate harmony that makes it one of the unmissable Romanesque elements in Segovia's formidable historical, artistic, and cultural heritage.

Tampoco el templo de Castillejo de Mesleón pudo superar indemne el paso, entre otros Jinetes del Apocalipsis, de esa apisonadora barroca que fue dejando su huella, como esa bestia de cuatro patas sobre la que cabalgaba el huno Atila imponiendo terror a sus enemigos además de dejar una huella imborrable en la hierba sobre la que tenía la desgracia de pasar.

Dedicado también a la figura de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, como el templo de Sequera de Fresno, la soledad de esta geometría consagrada en piedra, previsiblemente en el mismo tiempo en el que Leonor de Aquitania impulsaba la Cultura trovadoresca en sus famosas Cortés de Amor, solamente se ve alterada por el tráfico incesante de la Autovía del Norte y ocasionalmente, por aquellos que se desvían, algunos kilómetros antes, en dirección a Sepúlveda y ese sorprendente escenario natural que son las Hoces del río Duratón.

Queda, no obstante, lo suficiente de su arquitectura original, como para que el viajero curioso, que, como las brujas en Galicia, afortunadamente también existe, posponga unos minutos su cita con el destino y admira, sin complejos, un templo, que, después de todo, aun sin pecar de exceso de ornamentación, todavía se sigue caracterizando por esa afortunada armonía, que hace de él, uno de los elementos románicos de visita imperdible del formidable elenco histórico, artístico y cultural de Segovia.
