[ENG-SPN] The Mystery of Bareyo / El misterio de Bareyo

Not too far from the prosperous Cayón Valley and a short distance from a part of the Cantabrian coast where interesting traditions are still remembered regarding the landing of the biblical patriarch Noah or one of his descendants after the fateful cataclysm known as the Great Flood, the ancient Romanesque church of Santa María de Bareyo generates more questions than answers among historians.

Although some sources see in it and its curious symbolism—which, in reality, hardly differs from the prevailing themes of the time and the narrative associated with this type of building—the elusive shadow of knights, the Templars, who frequented not only so-called "places of power" but also the vicinity of pilgrim routes, there is no historical documentation to support this.

It is known, however, that on the hill upon which it stands, there were earlier temples where extremely difficult-to-eradicate cults were practiced. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that, as in the case of Cayón, legends and traditions still possess a special power when it comes to reminding us of the enduring elements of a rich mythology, which adds charm to the already picturesque setting of the place.

No excesivamente lejos del próspero valle de Cayón y a escasa distancia de una parte de la costa cántabra donde todavía se recuerdan interesantes tradiciones relativas al desembarco del patriarca bíblico Noé o alguno de sus descendientes después del fatídico episodio del cataclismo conocido con el nombre de Diluvio Universal, la ancestral iglesia románica de Santa María de Bareyo, genera, entre los historiadores, más incertidumbres que respuestas.

Aunque algunas fuentes ven en ella y su curiosa simbología -que, en realidad, apenas difiere de la temática imperante en la época y el relato asociado a este tipo de edificaciones- la escurridiza sombra de unos caballeros, los templarios, que solían frecuentar, no sólo los denominados ‘lugares de poder’, sino también la vecindad de los caminos peregrinos no existe documentación histórica que lo avale.

Sí se sabe, sin embargo, que en la que colina sobre la que se asienta, hubo templos anteriores, donde se practicaban cultos extremadamente difíciles de erradicar, por lo que no ha de extrañarnos, en absoluto, que, como en el caso de Cayón, las leyendas y tradiciones posean todavía una fuerza especial, a la hora de remitirnos a la pervivencia de elementos de una rica mitología, que adereza, con su encanto, la ya de por sí pintoresca situación del lugar.
