[ENG-SPN] The Maderuelo Code: Templars, Mummies, and Forgotten Treasures / El Código Maderuelo: Templarios, Momias y Tesoros Olvidados

Although it didn't always belong to the Community and Land of Segovia, as it does today, this picturesque town, which every summer takes advantage of its ancestral architecture and design to attract visitors with its diverse medieval fairs and markets, where you can still find all kinds of handcrafted objects that inspire serendipitous nostalgia for those "village things," is also a true cultural emporium, where reality and legend go hand in hand, leaving an adventure in the visitor's memory that they will likely never forget: Maderuelo.

It is believed that the name Maderuelo comes from those lush forests of oaks and holm oaks that were indiscriminately slaughtered for the timber trade and have practically disappeared today, although no one seems to remember that, outside its magnificent medieval townscape and currently separated from it by the waters of the Linares reservoir, which nearly turned it into underwater archaeology, like the lighthouse and Cleopatra's palace in Alexandria, lies the enigmatic hermitage of the Vera Cruz, where the Knights Templar kept vigil and guarded a Lignum Crucis, or fragment of the Cross on which Christ was executed, whose fate also lies buried in the ineffable mud of history.

The presence of the Templars in this place, therefore, in addition to the legends that tell of the powerful Constable of Castile, Don Álvaro de Luna, hiding part of his formidable treasure here, or the presence, in its main Romanesque church, Saint Mary, of the mummy of a mysterious young woman, likely of noble origin but unidentified, make this picturesque Castilian town, among other subtle enigmas, one of those destinations and settings that could fit perfectly into any of the novelistic settings of writers such as Dan Brown and his famous work "The Da Vinci Code."

A pesar de que no siempre perteneció a la Comunidad y Tierra de Segovia, como actualmente, este pintoresco pueblo, que todos los veranos aprovecha su ancestral arquitectura y diseño para atraer visitas con sus variopintas ferias y mercadillos medievales, donde todavía, además, es posible encontrar todo tipo de objetos artesanales que motiven la serendipia de la nostalgia por aquellas ‘cosas de pueblo’, es también un verdadero emporio cultural, donde realidad y leyenda se estrechan fuertemente la mano, para dejar, en la retina del visitante, una aventura, que, posiblemente, nunca olvidará: Maderuelo.

Se opina, del nombre, Maderuelo, que proviene de aquellos frondosos bosques de robles y encinas que fueron indiscriminadamente sacrificados para el negocio de la madera y que hoy, prácticamente han desaparecido, aunque nadie parece recordar, que, extramuros de su magnífico urbanismo medieval y actualmente separada, además, de él, por las aguas del embalse de Linares, que a punto estuvieron de convertirla en arqueología submarina, como el faro y el palacio de Cleopatra en Alejandría, se encuentra la enigmática ermita de la Vera Cruz, donde los caballeros templarios velaban armas y custodiaban un Lignum Crucis o fragmento de la Cruz donde Cristo fue ejecutado, cuyo destino yace también sepultado por los inefables lodos de la Historia.

La presencia de los templarios en el lugar, por tanto, además de las leyendas que refieren que aquí ocultó el poderoso Condestable de Castilla, Don Álvaro de Luna, parte de su formidable tesoro o la presencia, en su principal iglesia románica, la de Santa María, de la momia de una misteriosa joven, de probable origen noble, pero sin identificar, hacen de este pintoresco pueblo castellano, entre otros sutiles enigmas, uno de esos destinos y escenarios que podrían encajar, perfectamente, en cualquiera de los ambientes novelescos de escritores, como Dan Brown y su famosa obra ‘El Código Da Vinci’.
