[ENG-SPN] The Legacy of the Masters / La huella de los maestros

In the case of those brotherhoods of dreamers who made the ‘language of God’—that is, Sacred Geometry—cultural beacons along the length and breadth of roads, which, in many cases, took advantage of the reopening of ancient Roman roads, one could well apply to them that apt phrase, attributed to a mysterious Templar master named Roncellín, who said: “By their footprints you will know them.”

Given that anonymity was generally the most prevalent characteristic among them, modern historiography has no choice but to resort, in most cases, to comparative study. Beyond the persistence of a symbolism causally aligned with the intended narrative—a symbolism that, metaphorically and comparatively speaking, constituted the best marketing campaign of all time—one can discern, in the sculpture's molding, traces of the same hands that left their unmistakable personal mark along the way.

Such is the case, for example, of the Romanesque church in this beautiful village, Bárcena de Pie de Concha, a key stop on the Camino de Santiago as it passes through Cantabria. Moreover, situated at the foot of a mountain that still bears the name of the two-faced Roman god Janus—who, once Christianized, would represent the solstitial gates symbolized by the two Johns, the Baptist and the Evangelist—the name itself contains clear pilgrim and esoteric references. The church, besides being dedicated to the twin saints Cosmas and Damian, practitioners of medicine, bears the mark, in its sculpture, of the same stonemasons who worked on one of the most important of Cantabria's four collegiate churches: the Church of Santa Cruz de Castañeda.

En el caso de esas cofradías de soñadores que hacían del ‘lenguaje de Dios’, es decir, de la Geometría Sagrada, faros culturales a todo lo largo y ancho de unos caminos, que, en muchos casos, aprovechaban la reapertura de las antiguas calzadas romanas, bien que se les podría aplicar aquella oportuna frase, atribuida a un misterioso maestro templario, de nombre Roncellín, que decía aquello de: por sus huellas los conoceréis.

Dado, que, generalmente, no era, sino el anonimato lo que más abundaba entre ellas, la historiografía moderna no tiene más remedio que acudir, en una mayoría de casos, a ese estudio comparativo, donde más allá de la persistencia de una simbología que era causalmente afín al relato que se pretendía transmitir y que, de hecho, constituyó, metafórica y comparativamente hablando, la mejor campaña de Marketing de todos los tiempos, se aprecia, en la forma de moldeo de la escultura, trazos de unas mismas manos que fueron dejando su inequívoca marca personal a lo largo de los caminos.

Sería el caso, por ejemplo, de la iglesia románica de este precioso pueblo, Bárcena de Pie de Concha, puntero en el Camino de Santiago a su paso por Cantabria, que, además, situado a la vera de un monte que todavía lleva el nombre del dios romano de las dos caras, Jano -que representaría, una vez cristianizado, a las puertas solsticiales representadas por los dos Juanes, el Bautista y el Evangelista- contiene en el nombre claras referencias peregrinas y esotéricas. La iglesia, además de estar bajo la advocación de dos santos gemelos y practicantes de la Medicina, Cosme y Damián, denota, en su escultura, la huella de aquellos mismos canteros que laboraron en una de las más importantes de las cuatro Colegiatas de Cantabria: la de la Santa Cruz de Castañeda.
