[ENG-SPN] The Fortress that Sings to the Wind: Mysteries of Gormaz / La Fortaleza que Canta al Viento: Misterios de Gormaz

Soria, despite being a relatively small region and having suffered for much of its modern history from the complex that governmental neglect often produces, is being "discovered" in recent years thanks to its unique character. This distinctiveness, combining stunning natural landscapes with a remarkable historical, artistic, and, of course, cultural heritage, makes it a destination where adventure, in its many forms, is always guaranteed.

Worthy of the tales of the beautiful Scheherazade and the Arabian Nights, for example, the Caliphate fortress, which, from the hilltop—borrowing the title of an excellent novel by Irving Shaw—dominates the chromatic fields of Gormaz, guarding, incidentally, that priceless cultural treasure that is the pre-Romanesque church of Saint Michael, is a veritable poem of architecture. Although of military origins, it immerses us fully in those medieval times when the destinies of Spain were forged at the capricious whim of the cross and the crescent moon, and when History, moreover, was broken down into stories that, recounted orally in the comfortable refuge of homes, soon became epic legends.

Legends that, today, are accompanied by that metaphorical Meistersinger, or Master Singer, as Goethe would say, who is the perceptive wind that constantly beats against its battered walls, and in whose song some believe they hear the ‘Te Deum laudamus’ of the Christian warriors in assault, and others, the ‘In Shallah’ of the Muslim defenders, entrenched behind their regal battlements.

Soria, a pesar de ser una comunidad relativamente pequeña y arrastrar, durante buena parte de su historia moderna el complejo que produce siempre el ostracismo gubernamental, está siendo ‘descubierta’, de unos años a esta parte, en base a esa soberana idiosincrasia, que, aunando unos impresionantes lugares naturales con un sorprendente patrimonio, tanto histórico, como artístico y por supuesto, cultural hacen de ella un destino donde la aventura, en sus múltiples facetas, está siempre asegurada.

Digno de las historias de la bella Sherezade y las Mil y una noches, por ejemplo, la fortaleza califal, que, desde la cima de la colina –aprovechando el título de una excelente novela de Irving Shaw- domina los cromáticos campos de Gormaz, custodiando, de paso, ese inapreciable tesoro cultural que es la iglesia prerrománica de San Miguel, es todo un poema de arquitectura, que, aunque de orígenes bélicos, nos introduce de lleno en esos tiempos medievales en los que los destinos de España se fraguaban al capricho veleidoso de la cruz y de la media luna y donde la Historia, además, se descomponía en historias, que, contadas de viva voz al confortable refugio de los hogares, no tardaron en convertirse en épicas leyendas.

Leyendas, que, hoy en día, se ven acompañadas por ese metafórico Meistersinger o Maestro Cantor, como diría Goethe, que es el viento perspicaz que bate constantemente sus adolecidas murallas y en cuyo canto, unos creen oír el ‘Te deum laudamus’ de los guerreros cristianos al asalto y otros, el ‘In Shallah’ de los defensores musulmanes, parapetados detrás de sus regias almenas.
