[ENG-SPN] The Cloister as an Office: The Architecture of Leadership in the Middle Ages / El Claustro como Oficina: Arquitectura del Liderazgo en la Edad Media

We can see, in the great medieval monasteries, those early precursors of any modern business organization, where the entire complex was governed by a pyramidal, albeit practical, structure with well-distributed and differentiated functions: the church, the cloister, the kitchen, the refectory, the pantry, the monks' rooms, those for the converts, and the chapter house define the fundamental foundations.

As in modern organizations, the chapter house had the greatest visibility and, therefore, capital importance within the estate's facilities, as it was precisely here that the chapter of monks met, headed by the superiors, to discuss the status of all matters affecting the monastery and, of course, where relevant decisions were made regarding any problems that might arise.

These primitive antecedents of today's meeting rooms were usually located in the most well-lit part of the cloister and constituted, of all the surrounding rooms, one of the most significant spaces, as we have already mentioned, but also one of the most artistic and striking of all those that formed the carefully designed enclosures of these superb business monopolies, which, metaphorically and comparatively, we can assume were medieval monasteries.

Podríamos ver, en los grandes monasterios medievales, esos primeros antecedentes de cualquier organización empresarial moderna, donde todo el conjunto se regía desde una estructura piramidal, aunque práctica, con funciones bien distribuidas y diferenciadas: la iglesia, el claustro, la cocina, el refectorio, la cilla o despensa, las salas de los monjes, aquellas otras para los conversos y la sala capitular, definen los cimientos fundamentales.

Como en las modernas organizaciones, la sala capitular tenía la mayor visibilidad y, por lo tanto, una importancia capital dentro de las instalaciones del estamento, pues era, precisamente en ella, donde se reunía el capítulo de monjes, con los superiores a la cabeza para comentar el estado de todas las gestiones que afectaban al monasterio y por supuesto, donde se tomaban las decisiones pertinentes a los problemas que pudieran plantearse.

Estos primitivos antecedentes de las actuales salas de reunión solían estar situados en el lugar más iluminado del claustro y constituían, de todas las dependencias aledañas, uno de los lugares más relevantes, como ya hemos dicho, pero también, uno de los más artísticos e impactantes de cuantos formaban los calculados recintos de estos soberbios monopolios empresariales, que, de manera metafórica y comparativa, podemos suponer que fueron los monasterios medievales.
