[ENG-SPN] The Church That Finds the Traveler / El Templo que Encuentra al Viajero

The church of Perorrubio is another of those Romanesque architectural gems that, as the writer from Jaén, Juan Eslava Galán, would say, one should visit at least once in a lifetime. This visit often comes as a chance encounter for the traveler, who, even without knowing of its existence, sooner or later stumbles upon it, without leaving the local road they follow in their quest to get the most out of their cultural adventure, when they decide to 'lose themselves voluntarily' among the small villages in the surrounding area.

As one of the principles of that treasure of universal spirituality, the Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu, asserts, when one observes it, the traveler recognizes beauty as beautiful and, in doing so, deduces what is ugly, without caring at all that, in this case, time on the one hand and men on the other, have diminished some of its original charm, although not in such an openly hostile manner as they have unfortunately done in other temples in the area.

In their sculptures, the lions continue to adopt the innocent Daniel as their "pet"—and I apologize to the marketing creators of that famous board game, Scattergories—the ridiculous monsters, which so displeased the less imaginative Bernard, Abbot of Clairvaux, now exert their amusing influence on the imaginations of new generations. Amidst flourishes, centaurs, sirens, and eminent Seals of Solomon, these elements, along with the crosses pattée—their original red hues now lost—on either side of the main entrance to the temple, lead one to think, suspiciously, as happened to the writer and theosophist Mario Roso de Luna, that these same valiant soldiers of Christ once wandered here, paradoxically captured, tried, accused, and condemned for heresy. Can you guess who I'm talking about?

Es, la iglesia de Perorrubio, otra de esas arquitecturas románicas, que, como diría el escritor jiennense, Juan Eslava Galán, se recomienda visitar al menos una vez en la vida, visita que, además, suele sorprender de manera fortuita al viajero, pues éste, aun desconociendo su existencia, tarde o temprano se topa con ella, sin abandonar la carretera comarcal que sigue en su afán por sacarle el máximo valor a su aventura cultural, cuando decide ‘perderse voluntariamente’ por los pequeños pueblos del entorno.

Como asevera uno de los principios de ese tesoro de la espiritualidad universal que es el ‘Tao Te King’, de Lao-Tsé, cuando la observa, el viajero reconoce lo bello como bello y al hacerlo, deduce qué es lo feo, sin importarle, en absoluto, que, en este caso, el tiempo por un lado y los hombres por el otro, la hayan escatimado parte de su primitivo encanto original, aunque no de una manera tan abiertamente hostil, como han hecho, por desgracia, en otros templos de la zona.

En sus esculturas, los leones continúan adoptando al cándido Daniel como ‘animal de compañía’ -y que me perdonen los creadores del marketing de ese famoso juego de mesa, conocido como Scatergoris- los ridículos monstruos, que tanto disgustaban al poco fantasioso Bernardo, Abad de Claraval, ejercen ahora su divertido magisterio sobre la imaginación de las nuevas generaciones, entre florituras, centauros, sirenas y eminentes Sellos de Salomón, que, unidos a las cruces patadas que se aprecian, perdidos sus originales tintes rojos, a ambos lados de la puerta principal de entrada al templo, induzcan a pensar, de una manera suspicaz, como le ocurrió al escritor y teósofo, Mario Roso de Luna, que por aquí también deambularon, en tiempos, aquellos aguerridos soldados de Cristo, que, paradójicamente, fueron capturados, juzgados, acusados y condenados por herejía. ¿Se imaginan de quiénes hablo?.
