[ENG-SPN] The Center of the Labyrinth: Santillana del Mar and the Architecture of the Soul / El Centro del Laberinto: Santillana del Mar y la Arquitectura del Alma

Thinking of a place as special as Santillana del Mar brings to mind, as if by magic, that curious phrase by Hermann Hesse—a worthy recipient of the Nobel Prize, among others—which said something profoundly endearing: “For us travelers, all roads lead home.”

In fact, if I had to associate it with a Major Arcana from that hermetic, coded psyche, which is, without a doubt, the enigmatic deck of Tarot cards, I would undoubtedly see in it the grandiloquent figure of that enchanting creator of dreams, attuned to the world of illusion and its seductive circumstances, who is, without a doubt, the character known as the Magician.

Viewed in this way, the magic of Santillana del Mar revolves, beyond that astonishing temporal abyss that is its famous Altamira Caves and their marvelous contents of a forgotten world, in that other metaphorical Center of the Labyrinth, which is its splendid Collegiate Church. The town itself, with its medieval alleyways, is, to paraphrase that other mocker of Metaphysics, who, in essence, was also the extraordinary Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges. These mysterious paths, even as they diverge, never lose sight of it.

Pensar en un lugar tan especial como Santillana del Mar, hace que en mi recuerdo aparezca, como por arte de magia, aquella curiosa frase de Hermann Hesse –digno merecedor, entre otros, del Premio Nobel- que decía algo significativamente entrañable: ‘para nosotros los caminantes, todos los caminos conducen a casa’.

De hecho, si tuviera que asociarla con algún Arcano Mayor de esa hermética psiquitectura codificada, que es, no les cupa duda, la enigmática baraja de cartas del Tarot, no dudaría en ver en ella la figura grandilocuente de ese encantador creador de sueños, afín al mundo de la ilusión y sus seductoras circunstancias, que es, sin ningún género de dudas tampoco, el personaje conocido como el Mago.

Contemplada de esta manera, la magia, en Santillana del Mar, gira, más allá de ese sorprendente abismo temporal que son sus famosas cuevas de Altamira y su maravilloso contenido de un mundo olvidado, en aquel otro metafórico Centro del Laberinto, que es su espléndida Colegiata, siendo el pueblo y sus chinescas callejuelas medievales, parafraseando a ese otro burlador de la Metafísica, que, en el fondo, fue también el extraordinario escritor argentino, Jorge Luis Borges, esos misteriosos senderos, que, aun bifurcándose, jamás apartan de ella la mirada.
