I have always thought about José Luis Sampedro, that, beyond that outstanding writer who has provided me with so many hours of joyful reading, especially on those bitter occasions when I was going through one of those existential crises that medieval mystics called "dark nights of the soul," there was a remarkable character: one of those special beings, who knows, deep down, perhaps a citizen of a very special race, capable of preserving intact, until his death, that blessed first glance.

For this reason, for this innate ability, for this innocent and crystalline way of penetrating the meaning of things, which makes you not only a truthful chronicler but also a happy visionary, your reflections on the environment and the vital elements that comprise it always strike me as a lesson in beauty, which, in addition to being inimitable, also make me understand, like the tree that never gives up, that even the pettiness, cowardice, and attacks that lie in wait for us strengthen us, motivate us, and give us the certainty that we are on the right path. Thank you, José Luis.

Siempre he pensado sobre José Luis Sampedro, que, más allá de ese sobresaliente escritor que tantas horas de gozosa lectura me ha procurado, sobre todo en esas amargas ocasiones en las que estaba atravesando por alguna de esas crisis existenciales que los místicos medievales calificaban como de ‘noches oscuras del alma’, existía un notable personaje: uno de esos seres especiales, quién sabe, en el fondo, si ciudadano de una raza muy especial, capaz de conservar intacta, hasta su muerte, esa bendita primera mirada.

Por eso, por esa capacidad innata, por esa forma inocente y cristalina de penetrar el sentido de las cosas, que te convierte, no sólo en un veraz cronista sino también en un feliz visionario, sus reflexiones sobre el entorno y los elementos vitales que lo componen, me resultan siempre una lección de belleza, que, además de inimitable, me hacen también comprender, como al árbol que nunca se vence, que hasta las mezquindades, las cobardías y los ataques que nos acechan, nos robustecen, nos motivan y nos aportan la seguridad de que vamos por el camino correcto.
