[ENG-SPN] Elizmendi: the sanctuary that watches over the valleys of oblivion / Elizmendi: el santuario que vigila los valles del olvido

There is no doubt that the Llanada Alavesa, apart from being another of those great regions producing that praiseworthy beverage, wine, which was apparently discovered by the patriarch Noah after the famous episode of the Great Flood, also represents a land rich in history, whose cultural heritage extends, like a metaphorical pool of oil, from the enigmatic dolmens to a truly surprising Romanesque architecture.

If we find places of painstaking delicacy, such as the fascinating sanctuary of Our Lady of Estíbaliz or the outstanding Collegiate Church of Armentia, as we enter it and approach the border with Navarre, we will feel the vertigo of the centuries, with apparently rough places, but in whose ashlars, as fill, we will even see fragments of Roman tombstones, which will transport us, not only to those times in which the greed of Rome struck down with the claw of a beast on old Hispania, but also to the times of the presence of the first Christian missionaries, who, like the famous horse of Attila, became implacable destroyers of temples and ancient cults, following the directives of Saint Martin of Dumio and his particular crusade against 'the worshippers of stones'.

This unique historical adventure can be found, among other places, in the small town of Contrasta and in a church of somewhat crude construction, but elevated to the status of a sanctuary, in the fullest sense of the word. Situated on a high hill, it overlooks a stunning area made up of valleys, mountains, and forests, where it's incredible that the traveler isn't seduced by its magnetic beauty: Our Lady of Elizmendi.

No cabe duda de que la Llanada Alavesa, aparte de ser otra de esas grandes regiones productoras de esa meritoria bebida, que, al parecer, fue descubierta por el patriarca Noé después del famoso episodio del Diluvio Universal, el vino, representa también una tierra rica en Historia, cuyo Patrimonio Cultural se extiende, como una metafórica balsa de aceite, desde los enigmáticos dólmenes, hasta una arquitectura románica, verdaderamente sorprendente.

Si en ella encontramos lugares de esmerada delicadeza, como el fascinante santuario de Nuestra Señora de Estíbaliz o la sobresaliente Colegiata de Armentia, a medida que nos adentramos en ella y nos acercamos a la frontera con Navarra, sentiremos el vértigo de los siglos, con lugares aparentemente toscos, pero en cuyos sillares, de relleno, veremos incluso fragmentos de lápidas romanas, que nos transportarán, no sólo a aquellos tiempos en los que la codicia de Roma se abatió con zarpa de fiera sobre la vieja Hispania, sino también, a los tiempos de la presencia de los primeros misioneros cristianos, que, como el famoso caballo de Atila, se convirtieron en implacables destructores de templos y cultos antiguos, siguiendo las directrices de San Martín de Dumio y su cruzada particular contra ‘los adoradores de piedras’.

Esta singular aventura histórica, la podemos encontrar, entre otros lugares, en la pequeña población de Contrasta y en una iglesia de factura algo tosca en apariencia, pero elevada a la categoría de Santuario, en toda la extensión de la palabra, que, situada sobre una elevada colina, domina una zona asombrosa, formada por valles, montes y bosques, donde resulta increíble que el viajero no se deje seducir por su magnética belleza: Nuestra Señora de Elizmendi.
