[ENG-SPN] Stone Archetypes: What Romanesque Art Continues to Reveal Today / Arquetipos de Piedra: Lo que el Románico Sigue Revelando Hoy

In that unique and mysterious triangle formed by the border that delimits communities united by a sovereign past, such as Burgos, Palencia, and Cantabria, singular remnants of that true opiate of the masses, Romanesque architecture and sculpture, still remain: the same style that began to decline well into the 12th century, when the spires and pointed arches of Gothic architecture began to appear on the horizon.

In that same triangle, where the extraordinary phenomenon of hermitages and cave churches also flourished, traces remain that, although much modified in some cases by various circumstances, including that fickle force known as fashion, still preserve, with a certain dignity, some of the archetypes whose potential remains as valid today as it was then.

War, for example—that pandemic that enriches a few at the expense of many—remains a reality, in conflicts that, like those of medieval knights, seem to stretch into eternity. Or consider the equally eternal struggle between man and the ferocious beast poised to shatter his shield. This could be understood, from the perspective and psychological beauty of the metaphor, as the constant battle humanity must wage against its own biases in order to confront, with a reasonable chance of success, the most powerful beast of all: life itself. In short: different theaters and different stages for the same script.

En ese singular y misterioso triángulo, formado por la frontera que delimita a unas comunidades hermanadas por un soberano pasado, como son las de Burgos, Palencia y Cantabria, quedan todavía restos singulares de ese verdadero opio para el pueblo, que fue, sin duda alguna, la arquitectura y la escultura románica: la misma que comenzó a declinar bien terciado el siglo XII, cuando por el horizonte comenzaron a asomar las agujas y las ventanas ojivales del gótico.

En ese mismo triángulo, donde prolifero, además, el extraordinario fenómeno de los eremitorios y de las iglesias rupestres, quedan rastros, que, aunque muy modificados, en algunos casos, por diversas circunstancias, incluida esa representante de la veleidad que es la moda, todavía conservan, con cierta dignidad, parte de unos arquetipos, cuyo potencial continúa siendo tan válido hoy en día, como lo fue entonces.

La guerra, por ejemplo, esa pandemia que enriquece a unos pocos con la desgracia de muchos, continúa estando vigente, en unos enfrentamientos, que, como en el caso de los caballeros medievales, parece eternizarse también en el tiempo o esa lucha, no menos eterna, entre el hombre y esa bestia feroz que está a punto de destrozar el escudo con el que se protege, que bien se podría entender, desde la perspectiva y la belleza psicológica de la metáfora, como la lucha constante que el ser humano ha de sostener contra sus propios sesgos, para enfrentarse, con ciertas garantías de éxito, a la bestia más poderosa de todas: la propia vida. En definitiva: distintos teatros y distintos escenarios para un mismo guion.
