[ENG-SPN] Speculating on Romanesque Sculpture / Especulando con la escultura románica

It's always a pleasant pleasure to return to certain places, the traveler thinks, since, having recovered from the impression of finding himself once again, face to face with the ancient archetypes of a sculpture, complementary and associated with these models of ancestral architecture that he so passionately loves, Romanesque sculpture has, as its superb characteristic, brilliance, standing out precisely in this privileged area that delimits the border between Aragon and Navarre and that answers to the name of the Cinco Villas (Five Towns), which always invites him to let that metaphorical runaway horse roam as it pleases, which, from his point of view, is always something as subjective as speculation.

It also implies that, in some way, speculating, standing guard against this insurmountable array of medieval symbolism, thought, and customs, in an attempt to delve into the true intentions of those anonymous "stone druids," who were the stonemasons, is like trying to enter, bare-chested, into the dark dungeons of time, with the foolish intention of undertaking the impossible mission of trying to free that prisoner called the future from his confinement.

As cryptic, in principle, as the Machiavellian shadow of refined symbolism hidden in the hieratic figures, often not without subtle irony, that make up the Major Arcana of the Tarot, the traveler knows well that behind this paraphernalia of musicians, dancers, contortionists, prelates, indiscreet lovers, warriors, and dark bestiaries, lies another peculiar universe, one that, buried and parallel, challenges interpretive intuition. As in the case of the feverish and legendary knight of La Mancha, the visionary Don Quixote, it is not difficult to appreciate the giant shadow of meanings that always go beyond a simple literal meaning and that encourage one to continue persevering in their investigation.

Siempre resulta un grato placer volver a determinados lugares, piensa el viajero, toda vez, que, recuperado de la impresión de encontrarse de nuevo, frente a frente con los viejos arquetipos de una escultura, complementaria y asociada con estos modelos de arquitectura ancestral que tanto le apasionan, la Románica, tiene, como soberbia característica la brillantez, destacando, precisamente, en esta privilegiada zona que delimita la frontera entre Aragón y Navarra y que responde al nombre de las Cinco Villas, que le invitan siempre a dejar vagar a su antojo ese metafórico caballo desbocado, que, bajo su punto de vista, es siempre algo tan subjetivo como la especulación.

Supone, también, que, de alguna manera, especular, templando guardia frente a este insuperable conjunto de simbolismo, pensamiento y costumbres medievales, para intentar meterse en las verdaderas intenciones de aquellos anónimos ‘druidas de la piedra’, que fueron los canteros, es como tratar de introducirse, a pecho descubierto, en las oscuras mazmorras del tiempo, con la insensata intención de acometer la misión imposible de intentar liberar de su encierro a ese reo llamado futuro.

Tan crípticos, en principio, como la maquiavélica sombra de refinado simbolismo que se oculta en las hieráticas figuras no exentas, en muchos casos, de sutil ironía que componen los Arcanos Mayores del Tarot, sabe bien el viajero, que detrás de esta parafernalia de músicos, bailarinas, contorsionistas, prelados, amantes indiscretos, guerreros y tenebrosos bestiarios, se oculta otro universo peculiar, que, soterrado y paralelo, desafía a la intuición interpretativa y que, como en el caso del enfebrecido y legendario caballero de la Mancha, el visionario Don Quijote, no es difícil apreciar la sombra gigante de unos significados que van siempre más allá de una simple literalidad y que animan a continuar perseverando en su investigación.
