[ENG-SPN] Special Places on the Stars Way: Sarria / Lugares especiales del Camino de las Estrellas: Sarria

Less than twenty kilometers separate two of the most emblematic towns on Stars Way or Saint James Way as they pass through the Community of Lugo, once the additional difficulties of one of the most significant, essential, and exhausting places on the Way have been left behind: the ascent of the O Cebreiro Port: Sarria and Portomarín.

While it is true that, in the case of Portomarín, the pilgrim is aware that he is contemplating something similar to a mirage, since the medieval town, including its impressive church of Saint Nicholas, linked to the school of the famous architect of the Portico of Glory in the Cathedral of Compostela, Master Mateo, was moved from its original location when work was carried out on the Belesar reservoir; Sarria, on the other hand, continues to preserve, especially in its Francos Street, the ancient appearance it had in medieval times, when pilgrimages, in addition to being a true life adventure, also maintained their unwavering transcendental character, being, in addition, the closest thing to the "hero's journey," always present in all traditions.

After a few years in which the Sacred Route to Compostela suffered the rigors of ostracism and neglect, as well as an incomprehensible shortage of pilgrims, who seemed to have definitively forgotten one of the most important pilgrimage routes in the world, many of the towns that survived, moreover, a time marked by neglect and depopulation, now see multitudes of smiling figures of new generations passing through their streets. Many of them, unaware of the arcane keys contained in the temples that line the route, such as this humble hermitage in Sarria, whose sculptures are attacked by another great enemy: erosion, nevertheless embark on an extraordinary adventure, whose teachings, perhaps less hermetic, may reveal extraordinary values and a resilience in the face of life's difficulties that are difficult to match.

No llegan a la veintena los kilómetros que separan dos de las más emblemáticas poblaciones del Camino de las Estrellas o Camino de Santiago a su paso por la Comunidad de Lugo, una vez dejadas atrás las dificultades añadidas a uno de los lugares más significativos, imprescindibles y agotadores del Camino, como es la ascensión del Puerto de O Cebreiro: Sarria y Portomarín.

Si bien es cierto, que, en el caso de Portomarín, el peregrino es consciente de que contempla algo parecido a un espejismo, pues el pueblo medieval, incluida su impresionante iglesia sanjuanista de San Nicolás, vinculada a la escuela del célebre artífice del Pórtico de la Gloria de la catedral de Compostelana, el Maestro Mateo, fue trasladado de su lugar original cuando se procedió a las obras del embalse de Belesar; Sarria, por el contrario, sigue conservando, sobre todo, en su calle de los Francos, el antiguo aspecto que tenía en aquellos tiempos medievales, cuando las peregrinaciones, además de una auténtica aventura vital, mantenían también su inquebrantable carácter trascendental, siendo, por añadidura, lo más parecido al ‘viaje del héroe’, siempre presente en todas las tradiciones.

Después de unos años en los que la Ruta Sagrada a Compostela padeció los rigores del ostracismo y del olvido, así como una incomprensible sequía de peregrinos, que parecían haber olvidado definitivamente uno de los caminos de peregrinación más importantes del mundo, muchos de los pueblos que sobrevivieron, además, a un tiempo marcado por el olvido y la despoblación, ven ahora pasar por sus calle multitud de figuras risueñas de nuevas generaciones, que, en muchos casos ignorando las arcanas claves contenidas en los templos que jalonan la ruta, como esta humilde ermita de Sarria, cuyas esculturas se ven atacadas por otro gran enemigo, como es la erosión, desarrollan, no obstante, una extraordinaria aventura, cuyas enseñanzas, quizás menos herméticas, podrán de manifiesto unos valores extraordinarios y una resiliencia frente a las dificultades de la vida, difíciles de igualar.
