[ENG-SPN] Silence… the stone speaks / Silencio… habla la piedra

Silence… the stone speaks. We have just passed through the silent portico of one of the great architectural masterpieces of that style, Gothic, whose magic also unfolded in the main ports of the Cantabrian coast, leaving behind not only the mark of anonymous stonemasons who preferred the unpredictable maritime adventure to the arduous mountain paths of Roncesvalles, but also, by incorporating new artistic concepts, which, although varying in form, nevertheless maintained the essence of the era's narrative. We are in a legendary place, which, before telling its story with documents, already told it with legends: Santoña.

In fact, such is the case that a deeply rooted tradition still exists, although clearly lacking any historical basis, which insists on attributing to the Apostle James himself the founding, in the year 37 AD, of the ancient early medieval monastery that supposedly stood on this very spot, ravaged on numerous occasions by people from northern Europe, among whom, as could be expected, the Vikings and the Normans stand out. It is also possible to suggest that some of the mythology surrounding these persistent invaders can be seen reflected in certain themes of a sculpture which, like the vision of Cervantes' knight, Don Quixote of La Mancha, lends itself to various interpretations.

In that fabulous stone forest, formed by its solid columns that possibly replaced the ancient oak groves where Druid priests performed their secret ceremonies, one of the most remarkable Romanesque baptismal fonts in Cantabria's incredible heritage stands out, in addition to the consecration to a Virgin who, in these parts and under different titles, becomes the undisputed Patron Saint and protector of sailors: the very font in which great figures were baptized, such as the navigator Juan de la Cosa, who played a prominent role in Christopher Columbus's first two voyages to the New World.

Silencio…habla la piedra. Acabamos de atravesar el pórtico silencioso de una de las grandes arquitecturas de ese estilo, el gótico, cuya magia se desplegó también por los principales puertos del Cantábrico, dejando tras de sí, no sólo la huella de anónimos canteros que prefirieron la impredecible aventura marítima a los sufridos senderos montañosos de Roncesvalles, sino también, incorporando nuevas concepciones artísticas, que, aun variando en la forma, mantenían, sin embargo, lo sustancial del relato de la época. Estamos en un lugar legendario, que, antes de contar la historia con documentos, ya la contaba con leyendas: Santoña.

De hecho, tal es así, que todavía existe una tradición muy arraigada, aunque, evidentemente, carente de todo soporte histórico, que insiste en atribuir al propio Apóstol Santiago la fundación, en el año 37 después de Cristo, del antiguo monasterio altomedieval, que, se supone, hubo en este mismo lugar, asolado en numerosas ocasiones por gentes del norte de Europa, entre los que destacan, como no podía ser de otra manera, los vikingos y los normandos. Resulta posible, además, sugerir que parte de la mitología que acompañaba a estos perseverantes invasores, se pueda ver reproducida en algunas temáticas de una escultura, que, como la visión del cervantino caballero, Don Quijote de la Mancha, se presta a varios significados.

En ese fabuloso bosque de piedra, que son sus sólidas columnas y que posiblemente sustituyan a los antiguos bosques de robles donde los sacerdotes druidas daban cumplida cuenta de sus ceremonias secretas, destaca, además de la consagración a una Virgen, que, por estos lugares y con diferentes advocaciones, se torna en Patrona y protectora indiscutible de los marineros, una de las pilas románicas más fantásticas del increíble elenco patrimonial de Cantabria: la misma en la que se bautizó a grandes personajes, como el navegante Juan de la Cosa, quien tuviera un papel destacado en los dos primeros viajes de Cristóbal Colón al Nuevo Mundo.
