[ENG-SPN] San Vicente: The Magic of Reality / San Vicente: la magia de lo real

As the French writer Dominique Aubier said in her famous essay attempting to demonstrate the likelihood that Miguel de Cervantes made Don Quixote of La Mancha, the most brilliant knight-errant of all time, a hidden master of Prophecy and Kabbalah, "the magic of reality is everywhere!" This may well be the first sensation experienced by the nomad—understood as the traveler, the pilgrim, the tourist, or simply someone passing through—upon setting foot, whether weary from the vicissitudes of the journey or not, in San Vicente de la Barquera.

We follow that other route of the esoteric Game of the Goose, which, after leaving behind charming and mysterious places that characterize the so-called Northern Way, such as, undeniably, Comillas, Oreña, and Santillana, brings us ever closer to a border, that of Asturias, deeply marked by the presence of two immemorial landmarks, priceless treasures of immense media appeal: the Cantabrian Coast and its inland rival, the Picos de Europa.

Between one place and the other, the town that bears the name—and not by chance—of San Vicente de la Barquera, seems to us, with its radiant light, its picturesque charm, the beauty of its historic center, and those salty aromas scattered like seeds by the winds that sweep from all sides, a metaphorical paradise where every detail surprises us and encourages us to continue satisfying our appetite to see and know more, until we discover, fascinated, that behind the mirage of that brilliance that seduces the senses, lies, in reality, another fascinating universe, hidden in the signs, the legends, and the traditions that are worth discovering, and which we will do in subsequent posts. Because, as the pilgrim knows well, the Camino is made between each stage.

Como decía la escritora francesa, Dominique Aubier, en su célebre ensayo tendente a demostrar la probabilidad de que Miguel de Cervantes hiciera del más genial caballero andante de todos los tiempos, Don Quijote de la Mancha, un maestro encubierto de la Profecía y de la Cábala, ‘¡la magia de lo real está por todas partes!’. Esta puede ser, aproximadamente, la primera sensación que percibe el nómada -entiéndase como tal, al viajero, al peregrino, al turista o simplemente al que pasa en un momento dado por allí- al poner los pies, sufridos o no por las vicisitudes del camino, en San Vicente de la Barquera.

Seguimos ese otro itinerario del esotérico Juego de la Oca, que, después de dejar atrás lugares con encanto y misterio que caracterizan al denominado Camino del Norte, como son, indiscutiblemente, Comillas, Oreña y Santillana nos acerca cada vez más a una frontera, la de Asturias, profundamente marcada por la presencia de dos inmemoriales hitos, tesoros inapreciables de un mediático carisma, como son la Costa del Cantábrico y su rival en la tierra: los Picos de Europa.

Entre una y otro, el lugar que lleva por nombre -y no por casualidad- San Vicente de la Barquera, nos parece, con su radiante luz, su pintoresco encanto, la belleza de su casco urbano y esos aromas a salitre que esparcen como simiente esos vientos que baten por los cuatro costados, un metafórico paraíso donde cualquier detalle nos sorprende y nos anima a continuar saciando nuestro apetito de ver y saber más, hasta descubrir, fascinados, que detrás del espejismo de ese brillo que seduce los sentidos, se oculta, en realidad, otro fascinante universo, oculto en las señales, las leyendas y las tradiciones que merece la pena descubrir y que lo iremos haciendo en sucesivas entradas. Porque, como sabe bien el peregrino, entre tramo y tramo se hace el Camino.
