[ENG-SPN] San Juan: Gateway to Magical Soria / San Juan: la puerta de la Soria Mágica

Before venturing to the banks of the Duero River as it flows through Soria, where hermit saints, Hospitaller knights, Templar knights, and the nobility of the preeminent Twelve Lineages did everything possible to maintain their prominence and bring to life what still endures today in all its full force within the fabulous universe of legends, a visit to the spectacular Church of San Juan de Rabanera is essential. Its location, at the end of the equally legendary Calle de Caballeros, opposite the Provincial Council building and at the beginning of the descent towards the old bridge, the melancholic ruins of the Church of San Nicolás, and the ineffable mystery of the Co-Cathedral of San Pedro, make it one of the best starting points for one of the many cultural routes through what we could, without any hesitation, call ‘Magical Soria’.

But let us not be deceived by the beauty of its main portal, which bears no resemblance to the ambiguity of its original dedication: Saint John. Its tympanum, carved with a meticulousness perhaps displayed by the same Aquitaine hands that crafted neighboring sacred spaces of its style, such as Santo Domingo, depicts one of those curious saints who not only rival the Zoroastrian figures of the Magi, but are also found at particularly significant points along the Camino de Santiago, such as the impressive church that bears his name, located opposite the magnificent Cathedral of Santa María de Burgos: Saint Nicholas. It was salvaged from the destroyed church, originally located a few meters below—whose ruins miraculously still preserve some interesting Romanesque frescoes depicting the murder of the Archbishop of Canterbury—and added in a year when heritage was still not sufficiently valued and was hesitant to allow the removal of priceless treasures from our history, while a mysterious and brutal explosion reduced a third of the Siberian taiga to ashes in the Tunguska region: 1908.

And yet, beyond its harmonious beauty, those prominent goose-foot-shaped markings that the stonemasons did not conceal on the exterior of its pavement, and that Celtic wishing well, whose waters probably possessed some extraordinary power in medieval times, its interior hides a priceless treasure, to which not only countless miraculous healings are attributed—it could be reasonably assumed that faith does indeed move mountains—but also the reenactment of the well-known miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. The fish, although referring to the context of a winepress where the wheat never ran out. However, beyond even these details, which are not few, this magnificent carving holds two further mysteries that make it stand out from the rest: its mysterious appearance and its supposed belonging to the Knights Templar of the Monastery of San Polo.

Imprescindible, antes de aventurarse hacia esas riberas que besa el río Duero a su paso por Soria, donde santos eremitas, caballeros hospitalarios, caballeros templarios y nobleza de los preminentes Doce Linajes hicieron todo lo posible para no perder protagonismo y hacer realidad lo que todavía hoy se mantiene con toda su fuerza íntegra en el fabuloso universo de las leyendas, es una visita a la espectacular iglesia de San Juan de Rabanera. Su situación, al final de una calle no menos legendaria, como es la de Caballeros, enfrente del Palacio de la Diputación y al comienzo de esa bajada hacia el viejo puente, las melancólicas ruinas de la iglesia de San Nicolás y el inefable misterio de la Concatedral de San Pedro, hacen de ella uno de los mejores puntos de referencia para comenzar una de las múltiples rutas culturales por eso, que, sin vergüenza alguna, podríamos definir como ‘la Soria Mágica’.

Pero no nos dejemos engañar por la belleza de su portada principal, que no tiene ninguna referencia a la ambigüedad de su advocación original: San Juan. En su tímpano, labrado con un esmero quizás desplegado por las mismas manos aquitanas que tallaron vecinos recintos sacros de su estilo, como Santo Domingo, representa a uno de esos curiosos santos, que no sólo rivalizan con las zoroástricas figuras de los Magos de Oriente, sino que también se encuentran en puntos de especial relevancia del Camino de Santiago, como por ejemplo, la impresionante iglesia que lleva su nombre, situada enfrente de la soberbia catedral de Santa María de Burgos: San Nicolás. Fue recuperada de la abatida iglesia, originalmente situada algunos metros por debajo -cuyas ruinas, milagrosamente conservan todavía unos interesantes frescos románicos que representan el asesinato del Arzobispo de Canterbury- y añadida en un año en el que todavía el Patrimonio no estaba lo suficientemente valorado y hacía aguas a la hora de permitir la salida de inapreciables tesoros de nuestra historia, mientras una misteriosa y brutal explosión reducía a cenizas un tercio de la taiga siberiana en la región de Tunguska: 1908.

Y sin embargo, más allá de su armónica belleza, de esas relevantes marcas con forma de pata de oca que los canteros no disimularon en el exterior de su pavimento y de ese céltico pozo de los deseos, cuyas aguas probablemente tuvieran alguna extraordinaria virtud en época medieval, su interior esconde un tesoro inapreciable, al que no sólo se atribuyen innumerables curaciones milagrosas -pudiera suponerse, en buena ley, que la fe en ocasiones sí que mueve montañas- sino también la reproducción del conocido milagro de la multiplicación de los panes y los peces, aunque referido al ámbito de un lagar en el que el trigo nunca se terminaba. No obstante, más allá incluso de estos detalles, que no son pocos, tenemos, en esta magnífica talla, dos misterios más añadidos que la hacen sobresalir sobre el resto: su misteriosa aparición y su supuesta pertenencia a los caballeros templarios del monasterio de San Polo.
