[ENG-SPN] San Baudelio: A Temple Between Two Worlds / San Baudelio: un templo entre dos mundos

One of the greatest jewels of our incredible cultural heritage, and at the same time, a victim of one of the most scandalous acts of plunder in history, is located a few kilometers beyond the old medieval town of Berlanga de Duero, in a territory that witnessed the comings and goings of the Muslim leader Almanzor and where even El Cid Campeador himself held a stronghold and lordship.

This is the Mozarabic or repopulation hermitage of San Baudelio, a place that, precisely because it blends two seemingly opposing architectural styles—Christian and Muslim—constitutes one of the most unusual and inconceivable examples to be found on any of the countless pilgrimage routes leading to Santiago de Compostela. But beyond the looted paintings, where the greyhound ran alongside the hunter, the Nordic expressiveness of a saint of dubious existence, and even the fantastical palm tree, which, resembling the Herculean Atlanteans, seems to bear the entire weight of the dome on its outstretched branches, this magical sacred space is also linked to a perplexing and dark object of desire: the Holy Grail.

But aside from the plausibility of this associative legend, which may have originated much later, the strangest and most curious feature, and the one that has given rise to numerous interpretations, is none other than the small, egg-shaped cubicle visible between the trunk and the branches of the palm tree. Far from appearing as a hiding place, as some official sources have suggested, the most widespread interpretations tend to see it as a kind of initiatory chamber, symbolically and strategically located in the middle of an element that unites earth and sky. And it may well be that its location, at a confluence of telluric currents or "serpents" (wouivres) as the Celts called them, is precisely the spark that ignites truly astonishing experiences.

Una de las mayores joyas de nuestro increíble Patrimonio cultural y a la vez, víctima de uno de los expolios más escandalosos de la Historia, la encontramos a algunos kilómetros más allá de la antigua villa medieval de Berlanga de Duero, dentro de un territorio que conoció las idas y venidas del caudillo musulmán Almanzor y donde incluso el propio Cid Campeador tuvo plaza y señorío.

Se trata de la ermita mozárabe o de repoblación de San Baudelio, lugar que, precisamente por maridar dos arquitecturas aparentemente enfrentadas, como son la cristiana y la musulmana, ya constituye uno de los modelos más insólitos e inconcebibles de cuantos se puedan encontrar en cualquiera de los innumerables caminos de peregrinación que llevan a Santiago de Compostela. Pero, más allá de las expoliadas pinturas, donde ya el galgo corría junto al cazador, la expresividad nórdica de un santo de dudosa existencia e incluso la fantástica palmera, que, semejando a los hercúleos atlantes parece soportar sobre sus extendidas ramas todo el peso de la cúpula, este mágico espacio sagrado está también relacionado con un desconcertante y oscuro objeto de deseo: el Santo Grial.

Pero, aparte de la verosimilitud de esta leyenda asociativa, que quizás haya tenido su origen en siglos muy posteriores, lo más extraño, curioso y que ha dado lugar a numerosas interpretaciones, no sea otra cosa que el pequeño cubículo en forma de huevo que se aprecia entre el tronco y los brazos de la palmera. Lejos de parecer un escondite, como se ha aventurado en fuentes oficiales, las interpretaciones más generalizadas tienden a ver en él, una especie de cubículo iniciático, simbólica y estratégicamente situado en mitad de un elemento que une la tierra con el cielo. Y puede ser, que, además, sea precisamente su ubicación, en un centro de unión de corrientes telúricas o ‘serpientes’ (wouivres) como las denominaban los celtas, la chispa que encienda la mecha a experiencias verdaderamente sorprendentes.
