[ENG-SPN] Saint Cyprian: The Sorcerer of Forgotten Romanesque Art / San Cipriano: El Hechicero del Románico Olvidado

Some sense, following the lines and mythological themes of its abundant corbels, the anonymous yet deeply involved hand in the medieval narrative that transformed these ancient temples into a kind of branded content, whose spiritual marketing defied time like no other campaign in history, of the master who completed the last quarter of the lower cloister of the important monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos.

Today we find ourselves before the charismatic Romanesque architecture of the mid-12th century, dedicated to the figure of a formidable saint, whose name, Cyprian, will surely be familiar to all those acquainted with the bestiaries and grimoires of the Middle Ages.

The place, a solitary hill that rises not only above the tranquil village of Oquillas—perhaps a reminder of those metaphorical geese that were also the brotherhoods of itinerant stonemasons—but also, like a lighthouse, seemingly watching over, with the patience of eternity, the comings and goings that occur on that vital artery, which is, of course, the Autovía del Norte (Northern Highway), in an area that also boasts—attention, travelers and pilgrims—wine of unsurpassed quality and, above all, an exceptional cheese: Esgueva.

Hay quien presiente, siguiendo los trazos y las temáticas mitológicas de sus abundantes canecillos, la mano anónima pero implicada en el relato medieval que hizo de estos templos ancestrales un comparativo ‘branded content’, cuyo marketing espiritual desafió al tiempo como ninguna otra campaña de la Historia, del maestro que finalizó el último cuarto del claustro inferior del importante monasterio de Santo Domingo de Silos.

Hoy nos encontramos frente a la carismática arquitectura románica de mediados del siglo XII, dedicada a la figura de un santo de armas tomar, cuyo nombre, Cipriano, ha de resultar determinantemente familiar para todos aquellos que estén familiarizados con los bestiarios y grimorios de la Edad Media.

El lugar, una solitaria colina que se alza, no sólo sobre el tranquilo pueblo de Oquillas -¿recuerdo, quizás, de aquellas metafóricas ocas que eran también las hermandades de canteros itinerantes?- sino también, como un faro que parece vigilar, con la paciencia de lo eterno, las idas y venidas que se producen en esa arteria vital, que es, desde luego, la Autovía del Norte, en una zona que goza además -atentos, viajeros y peregrinos- de un vino de calidad insuperable y sobre todo, de un queso excepcional: la Esgueva.
