[ENG-SPN] Romanesque Art in Dialogue with Jung / El Románico que Dialoga con Jung

The Romanesque church of San Miguel in Sotosalbos, where we find ourselves on this occasion, with the sharp peaks of the Sierra del Dragón (as the Sierra de Guadarrama, the natural border between Madrid and Segovia, was known in medieval times) always on the horizon, reminds us, in a comparative and perhaps even dreamlike way, of Jung's Red Book, if not of Spanish Romanesque art, then at least of the Romanesque art of Segovia.

It's February, and it's also a time to lend a hand to that hidden treasure, which is popular tradition. We're delighted to see that those birds that keep the snakes at bay in the fields, the storks, continue to keep their promise, returning to the nests that still hold the flavors of bygone seasons, on the rooftops and in the tower of this very church, which also witnessed the irrepressible attacks of lust in the figure of Juan Ruiz, the famous Archpriest of Hita, author of that manifesto of supposed amorous triumphs, which was and continues to be, the Book of Good Love.

Seeing the superb number of archetypal sculptures that crown, with varying degrees of harmonious determination, the corbels, metopes, and capitals of this multinational of medieval marketing, which is, in essence, this well-matched ensemble of sacred geometry, we wonder if we are witnessing, after all, that manifestation of the collective unconscious, born in the archaic world of dreams, also appearing In our waking hours, under these archetypal forms, which, as with Jung, sometimes aid us, serving as our guide, and at other times, on the contrary, terrify us, revealing the most monstrous face of our own biases.

La iglesia románica de San Miguel, en Sotosalbos, lugar donde nos encontramos en esta ocasión, manteniendo siempre en nuestro horizonte los perfilados picos de esa Sierra del Dragón, como en tiempos medievales se conocía a la Sierra de Guadarrama, frontera natural entre Madrid y Segovia, nos recuerda, de una manera comparativa y posiblemente, también ensoñadora, el Libro Rojo de Jung, si no del románico español, sí, al menos, del románico de Segovia.

Estamos en febrero, además, para echar un cable a ese tesoro oculto, que es la tradición popular y nos alegramos ver que esas aves que mantienen a raya a las serpientes en los campos, las cigüeñas, continúan siendo fieles a su promesa, regresando a los nidos que todavía guardan sabores de estaciones pasadas, en los tejados y en la torre de esta misma iglesia, que fue, además, testigo de los irreprimibles ataques de la lívido en la figura de Juan Ruiz, el famoso Arcipreste de Hita, autor de ese manifiesto de supuestos triunfos amorosos, que fue y continúa siendo, el Libro de Buen Amor.

Viendo la soberbia cantidad de esculturas arquetípicas que coronan, con más o menos armónica determinación, los canecillos, las metopas y los capiteles de esta multinacional del marketing medieval, que es, en el fondo, este conjunto bien avenido de geometría sacra, nos preguntamos si estamos presenciando, después de todo, esa manifestación del inconsciente colectivo, que nace en el mundo arcaico de los sueños, apareciéndose también en la vigilia, bajo esas formas arquetípicas, que, como a Jung, unas veces nos auxilian, sirviéndonos de guía y otras, por el contrario, nos aterrorizan, mostrándonos el rostro más monstruoso de nuestros propios sesgos.
